?? Happy STEM Day! ?? Did you know that firefighting and fire safety rely heavily on STEM? Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math are at the core of everything we do to keep our community safe. From understanding fire behavior and hazardous materials to using data and engineering to design safer buildings, STEM helps us prepare, respond, and protect. Firefighters and fire inspectors use technology to monitor fire risks, math to calculate water flow and pressure, and science to assess fire behavior. Fire science is a perfect example of STEM in action, saving lives and advancing safety!

Our Winchester, Virginia plant hosted professors and students from the University of Notre Dame and Clemson University to set up and pour specimens for the Precast Buckling-Restrained Braced (BRB) Frame Research Project. These were some of the most complicated pieces that our drafters, engineers, and plant associates have seen to date. The level of care shown by all, including our two Winchester summer interns who were able to be involved in this unique work, was second to none. After months of meetings, analytical work, developing drawings, lots of work to refine the details, and securing the materials needed, we successfully produced these frame specimens that will be tested at the University of Notre Dame in the coming months. The Precast BRB Frames research is a major, multi-year research project funded by the National Science Foundation, PCI, and many precast producers in conjunction with University of Notre Dame, Clemson University, and University of California San Diego to develop and codify a new seismic force-resisting system. The research consists of analytical work at Clemson, laboratory testing at UND, and shake table testing at UCSD. This major research project was born out of three PCI Jenny Fellowships that were awarded by the PCI R&D Council to Notre Dame and Clemson. Through the collaboration of those teams and advisory groups, we are seeing code changing research which is exciting to all who are involved. #leaders #thankyou #precastconcrete #educators #shockeyprecast

David Padgett, associate Professor of Geography, and Director of the Geographic Information Sciences (GISc) Laboratory, is presenting at the 9th Annual Black Sustainability Summit! His presentation, The HBCU Justice 40 Funds Tracking Tool - Hands-On Beta Test and Workshop, will cover the HBCU Environmental Justice Technical Collaborative (HEJTC). The HEJTC is a working group comprised of HBCU-affiliated geospatial technology, earth science, engineering, and social science experts who were convened by Dr. Robert Bullard in 2021. After his presentation: 1.) Participants will learn how to use the HBCU Justice 40 Funds Tracking Tool to identify local organizations and agencies that are recipients of Justice 40 initiative funding. 2.) Participants will gain greater understanding of the Justice 40 initiative process and its relationship to designated local "disadvantaged communities." 3.) Participants will learn the basic first steps in using the HBCU Justice 40 Funds Track Tool and other information platforms to engage in research on where Justice 40 funds are landing in their communities. 4.) Participants, after being exposed to the HBCU Justice 40 Funds Tracking Tool, will be allowed to provide feedback that will be used to increase the user-friendliness and opperabilty of the public-facing part of the tool. Rowan University Strengthens Partnership with ERDC at CRREL “It’s been a gamechanger.” That’s how Dr. Yusuf Mehta, leader of Rowan University's CREATES center, describes the collaboration with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC). This summer, the partnership reached new heights when over 20 Rowan faculty, staff, and students visited ERDC’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) in Hanover, NH. The two-day visit was filled with insightful learning, networking, and collaboration. Rowan’s team had the opportunity to tour CRREL’s state-of-the-art facilities, dive deep into groundbreaking research, and share their own innovations in advanced transportation engineering.
