An important source of housing in many rural communities are rental homes financed by USDA. Today, there are nearly 13,000 USDA rental properties providing around 400,000 affordable homes to families and individuals across rural America. Once the mortgage on the property matures, the units lose their rental subsidy and thus often their affordability. Significant federal commitment is needed to address this rising crisis. HAC supports the bipartisan Rural Housing Service Reform Act (S. 2790 & H.R. 6785), which would decouple Section 521 rental assistance from Section 515 maturing mortgages to allow the rental assistance to continue after the mortgage is paid off.
