World Breastfeeding Week Global rates of exclusive breastfeeding have increased by 11 percentage points over the last decade. This means just under half of all babies are now exclusively breastfed in their first six months of life. But to ensure every child has the opportunity to benefit from the power of breastmilk, the world must do more. UNICEF is working with governments and partners across the world to create a more supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers. This includes ensuring that: ? Every mother has access to breastfeeding support and family-friendly policies such as paid parental leave, paid breastfeeding breaks and breastfeeding spaces. ?? Every parent is protected from aggressive marketing of breastmilk substitutes. ?? Countries improve monitoring systems that track policies, programs, and funding relating to breastfeeding. #Breastfeeding #Exclusive_breastfeeding #Infantnutrition #UNICEF #WHO #FAO #Dietitian #Nutritionist

#WorldBreastfeedingWeek: I have always wondered about such 'weeks' and 'days' and if it is tokenism to talk about an issue for a day or a week, then let it slide down our priorities. However, as Sufia Askari says here, these celebrations play a significant role. It is important to underline and highlight the obvious, the seemingly common messages that remain critical and urgent – you never know where you leave a lasting impact with your words. With all our collective messages concentrated into a small time frame (or as the Young People say, a "message storm"), we can reach a larger audience, a new audience, and hope to create a small change in attitude somewhere. When it comes to maternal and child health, perhaps it is even more important to repeat the not-so-unknown messages as it is to come up with breakthrough ideas? Hope you are following Sight and Life's work updates - we welcome your comments and queries as always. #ClosetheGap #WorldBreastfeedingWeek2024
On Breastfeeding Week, we need to ask: does every lactating mother have access to safe and welcoming breastfeeding spaces in all walks of her life? The answer will still be: no. Progress has been made in all our countries but it is an undesirable reality that many people still think of breastfeeding as a private task that mothers should be doing in hiding, even at home. Support can come in various shapes and sizes - gentle encouragement, advice, offer of a space, counselling, policymaking, advocating or simply talking about it to people we know and creating awareness and understanding. By providing #BreastfeedingSupportForAll, we can create the right environment for healthier generations and happier women. #ClosetheGap #WorldBreastfeedingWeek2024

This World Breastfeeding Week, let's show appreciation for breastfeeding mothers and ensure they receive the necessary support. Different forms of breastfeeding support are essential, whether it's having staff who welcome breastfeeding in local cafes, receiving valuable advice from healthcare professionals, or benefiting from maternity protections provided by the government. These measures play a crucial role in safeguarding the health and rights of women and infants. Women worldwide have the right to receive respectful breastfeeding guidance from trained healthcare providers, as well as access to laws and policies such as maternity leave and provisions like paid time off upon returning to work. Together, we can create an environment where women feel empowered to breastfeed anywhere, anytime, while also working towards enhancing the status and well-being of women in various aspects of life. Key Support for Mothers: Ensuring women can breastfeed openly without stigma in public settings Implementing effective maternity benefits that don't force women to choose between work and family Providing training for healthcare professionals to offer supportive and respectful breastfeeding assistance Putting an end to exploitative promotions of baby formula in all environments #WorldBreastfeedingWeek #TogetherForMoms #WBW2024 #WABA #ClosingTheGap #BreastfeedingSupportForAll#worldbreastfeedingweek2024 #WarmChain #breastfeeding #SDGs #buildingbackbetter

During National Breastfeeding Month, we want to take a moment to remind you of what we, at the California Breastfeeding Coalition, are all about. Our job is to change the systems that create barriers, keeping families from reaching their breastfeeding goals. We believe that every breastfeeding journey is a success, no matter the duration or outcome. It’s not about changing individuals—it’s about tackling the external factors that make breastfeeding challenging, from advocating for paid family leave to ensuring accessible and consistent lactation support. We’re committed to creating a space where every family has the opportunity to breastfeed in the way that works best for them and creating lasting change that supports every family’s unique journey. #NationalBreastfeedingMonth #ChangingSystems #BreastfeedingSupport #CaliforniaBreastfeedingCoalition #LactationSupport #BreastfeedingJourney #InclusiveBreastfeeding

When you think about improving maternal and child health outcomes, you can’t help but think of the WIC program. ? USDA is celebrating five decades of supporting healthy families through nutrition education, health screenings, breastfeeding support, and access to nutritious foods. WIC is vitally important for people of color who are at greater risk for severe pregnancy-related health concerns and are more likely to experience higher levels of food hardship. ? #ChildHealth #MaternalHealth #MaximusSolutions ?

World Breastfeeding Week ?? One of the key message of #WorldBreastfeedingWeek2024 is "support for women to breastfeed anytime, anywhere, so that it is normalised and not censure in public life". Professor Lisanne du Plessis, a leading academic from Stellenbosch University focused on Public Health and Community Nutrition looks at this key message in the South African context: "In my opinion, the barriers to breastfeeding are not cultural issues, but societal," says Prof du Plessis. "This includes unsupportive workplaces and public spaces, lack of or poorly implemented maternity protection policies, ignorance about correct breastfeeding practices, lack of access to lactation support and social perceptions about women's roles.” “Mothers need to be supported to nourish and nurture their babies, and their partners, own mothers, mothers-in-law, grandmothers and the broader family and community should be educated on how to support breastfeeding mothers and about the dangers of introducing commercial milk formula unnecessarily." #closingthegap #breastfeeding #supportbreastfeedingmothers #ADSA #associationfordieteticsinsouthafrica
