For the drivers & teams seeking sponsorship: Recently there was an article about NASCAR broadcasts and what needs to be fixed about them. One thing mentioned was the fact that back runners do not get coverage. I’ll address two aspects of the situation. First, I 100% agree this is an issue, however, from my PR background, I know that unless there is actual news, we don’t issue a press release.?The same holds then for reporters.?They are not going to report on something that is not news. And quite frankly, someone running in a NASCAR Series – that information alone - is not news. How do you address the issue then??Make the news.?Don’t make something up. Instead, work with your team or your sponsor to find something newsworthy. The second point is that the lack of coverage of half the field is not new.?It’s not new to any level of racing. It is not something new this year. If you rely on the coverage of you and your sponsor before, during, or after the race to sell your sponsorship, you are doing yourself, your sponsors, and future sponsor seekers a huge disservice. You will end up with a pissed-off sponsor who did not get TV time and certainly will not re-sign with you.?You will earn a bad reputation as someone who does not fulfill sponsorship obligations.?And, you will make it harder for the next person to sell sponsorship, because you promised something you have no control over. What can you control? Your audience and your reputation. Sell the fact that the sponsor and the company can be a part of the team.? That you can offer certain experiences. That fans create emotional bonds with the sponsor who sponsors their favorite driver, or the sport.?Our fans are very appreciative of our sponsors.
