I am a Christian, MBA, and veteran and believe in the US constitution. I have significant combat experience as only a child. Changes I will make: 1) Downsize the #USMC to a division (1st marine) and move it to the Army. The Army historically has had to do beach landings and we are wasting resources on a separate service in the Navy. They will run the Army amphibious warfare school and anyone who graduates would be authorized to wear a marine patch. 2) Create a separate department for US Army special forces in the Army as their unconventional warfare mission is very different. They would run their own basic training, have their own CT Unit based on the selous scouts with a tracking ethos, and have whatever specialized weapons and equipment they needed. 3) Creating a Patriot Corp in the army that is Marine, Airborne, and Air Assault. This is not the same as the rangers as they are light infantry and part of SOCOM. 4) Conduct a study to start a legion in the army (bankruptcy, criminals, immigrants). That would likely boost recruiting. 5) Ban all forms of enhanced interrogation, torture, etc. and refuse to work with any agencies who do. I will also ban the practice of loaning the CIA SOCOM personnel. 6) Downsize the entire US Military by kicking out homosexuals, women, and transgenders. Consider getting rid of multiple current corps in the Army. 7) Privatize all recruiting. 8) Order all troops back to America including the Navy. If we aren't at war there is no need for them to be overseas other than for training exercises with our allies. All overseas bases will be closed. 9) Reorganize United States Department of Defense. US National Guard - US Army - Rangers Dept of the Special forces corp US air guard - US Air force - para rescue dept of the space force US coast guard - US Navy - Seals Dept of the submarine force. 10) Raise Pay for everyone remaining. The doctors, nurses, technicians, therapists (physical, occupational and mental health) have all been great. I realize that others have complaints. Those are all well documented and I'm doing them no disservice. I'm talking about something different, which is one of my aims with this project. In line with my advice being free, I offer one solution that will cost $0, and another solution that will save millions. Having worked with and as part of the interagency community, Andrew Morgado's takeaways from Todd Schmidt, Ph.D.'s book, "Silent Coup of the Guardians," are spot on. ? "We may all prefer strategy driving the allocation of resources so we are able to meet our strategic position, but how long can we sustain this model?" If policy drives strategy, then flawed or inconsistent policy in turn drives bad strategy and misguided resource allocation. One side of that equation is a major challenge... and some of it follows below. ? The military’s size, expertise and ability to plan produces a level of preparedness not readily matched by other government agencies. Our ideas of what constitutes "planning" are also vastly different. One agency's idea of a tabletop wargame might involve little more than uninformed resource allocation while another's might boil down to "just tell me what to do." The inconsistency of planning culture is always a challenge. ? "Our societal 'intolerance' of complexity narrows options and limits implementation of truly effective solutions." Societally, we have a short attention span and a general dislike of messy things (the uncertainty that comes with thinking strategically). This also describes your average reality TV show and the beltway. If you try to explain to a member of congress a strategy that will require more than the length of their term to execute, their eyes gloss over. Trust me on this, I've seen it happen more than once. Andy's top quote is also painfully true, and a reflection of those three points: “The process by which the United States copes with and confronts such challenges requires an array of competent actors from different communities, backgrounds, experiences, knowledge and expertise with the commitment, capability, and capacity to take ownership and remain engaged over the long term.”

Two-time U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) alumnus (#AMSP and #asp3) Todd Schmidt, Ph.D. presents a compelling arguement and traces the contemporary theory and history of Civil-Military relations in the US. Our military is incredibly capable due to its expertise, placement and resources, but is our efficiency and effectiveness crowding out broader and more enduring solutions?
