National accounting groups are pushing for an alternative to a controversial 150-hour requirement for state licenses, but their proposal is raising fresh concerns, reports Mark Maurer ?? A: August 2019 Q: How did you first hear about CSH? A: I first learned about CSH when I drove past the Columbus office at Easton Town Center. Q: What does a typical day look like? A: I work in the State and Local Tax group and specialize in indirect taxation. My work is more consultative in nature. I have a small amount of compliance engagements, but most of my work is focused on consulting/advising, responding to tax notices, audit resolution, and other project work (e.g., Employee Retention Tax Credit, OH Commercial Activity Tax, etc.). Q: Where did you go to school, and what did you study? A: Franklin University, BA in Accounting and Forensic Accounting. A: I get to serve a broad and diverse client base, each with their own complications and nuances. This brings variety to my workdays that I value and appreciate. An interesting read that presents one of the biggest problems with the dwindling "CPA pipeline." The licensure issue (and the discussion around mobility/substantial equivalency) has been a hot topic in the profession that's been gaining traction for the better part of 2 years. It has been top of mind for many groups, including the Board of Trustees for the New Jersey Society of CPAs. The society established several pipeline task forces (including one that I led) that addresses nuances to this issue (e.g., legislative, career awareness, employer action, and membership initiatives), and also seeks feedback from fellow NJ CPAs to see if we can reduce barriers to licensure while maintaining the prestige that comes with becoming a licensed CPA. In fact, a recent poll of approximately 1,000 NJ CPAs found that 62% felt there was no noticeable difference between CPA candidates that graduated with 120 credits vs. candidates that graduated with 150 credits. There's so much that can be said, however if we expect to change with the times we must do so now, quickly, and with as little red tape as possible.

Enrolled agents (EAs) are tax-focused professionals who have qualified to represent their clients before the Internal Revenue Service by either passing a three-part examination administered by the IRS or by working at the IRS over a period of time. Known as the Special Enrollment Exam (SEE), it is the highest credential awarded by the IRS. Certified public accountants (CPAs) are also qualified to represent clients before the IRS, but their licenses are managed at the state level and are subject to differing requirements when it comes to maintaining their IRS practice privileges. Both enrolled agents and certified public accountants are qualified tax professionals. As of 2023, there are more than 670,000 actively licensed CPAs and 65,000 EAs. While an EA may focus more on tax preparation and providing tax-related advice, the role of a CPA may also include other accounting practices such as auditing, bookkeeping, preparing financial statements, financial planning, or broader strategic business advisory services. How one achieves and maintains these credentials can differ from state to state. One of the most important distinctions is what qualifies as “continuing education” to maintain one’s status as an enrolled agent vs. a CPA. The next 100 days are poised to bring more change to the accounting profession than at anytime in the last decade or more.
