Hands up for #HIVprevention The decline in new HIV infections among adults has stalled. The UNAIDS Prevention gap report shows that worldwide an estimated 1.9 million adults have become infected with HIV every year for at least the past five years and that the number of new HIV infections is rising in some regions. The report shows that HIV prevention efforts must be reinvigorated if the world is to stay on the Fast-Track to ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030. Hands up campaign In the lead-up to World AIDS Day 2016, the hands up for #HIVprevention campaign will explore different aspects of HIV prevention and how they relate to specific groups of people, such as adolescent girls and young women, key populations and people living with HIV. Starting in September, the campaign will also offer people a space to express their views on what they think needs to be done to strengthen HIV prevention efforts. UNAIDS is asking people around the world to submit: A photograph of a word or short phrase written on the palm of their hand summarizing what we need to strengthen HIV prevention efforts, for example more condoms, empowerment, inclusion, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), rights for women and girls.

Since the 1980s, governments and other development actors have been doing everything to reduce the spread of HIV. As part of concerted efforts, we have been researching how people living with HIV can act as advocates and encourage members of their social networks to engage in protective behaviors such as HIV testing, condom use, and antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. Africa is contributing to groundbreaking data from the PURPOSE 2 study, which explores twice-yearly lenacapavir for HIV prevention. This study, with participants from South Africa and Uganda , is one of the scientific highlights showcased at the 5th HIV Research for Prevention Conference, better known as HIVR4P 2024, in Lima, Peru. A key development is the promising results from the PURPOSE 1 study, which demonstrated that lenacapavir, a biannual HIV prevention injectable, reduced HIV acquisitions by 100%

Introduction by Croakey: The 25th International AIDS Conference is taking place this week in Munich, Germany, with the theme ‘putting people first’. Conference organisers explain that this means thinking of solutions from the point of view of those most affected. “For example, rather than thinking of hard-to-reach populations, we should think of hard-to-reach health services. HIV responses must be built for the individual, especially the most vulnerable,” they say. Meanwhile, researchers from the Kirby Institute at UNSW Sydney have outlined reforms that would enable more equitable access to an important element of HIV prevention, Pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP. Their recommendations, which include measures to ensure cheaper, easier access to PrEP, are timely as the national Scope of Practice Review develops recommendations aimed at ensuring more equitable access to primary care.

Providers and health systems have an essential role in #EndingtheHIVEpidemic. In the most recent post on the Journal of Clinical Pathways blog, my coauthors and I discuss a new #ImprovementActivity included in CMS' Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and share how providers can enhance their #HIVprevention efforts in line with CMS' #valuebasedcare initiatives.
