Professor of Operations Research and Management | Innovative, Analytical Problem Solver | Orchestrator of Govt. & Business Consulting Projects | Scheduling Optimizer

Seeking real-world problems for next year's Operations Research students to solve! Now that the United States Air Force Academy class of 2024 is graduated and enjoying some well-deserved time off, it's time for me to "prep the battlefield" for the class of 2025. Each year, our United States Air Force Academy, Department of Management's Operations Research Course takes on a variety of ill-defined problems from military, government, business and/or non-profit organizations. The goal of the course is to have teams of students (with faculty support) work through real-world problems and deliver data-driven solutions near the end of the academic year (i.e. April 2025). Operations Research cadets specialize in analytics and building mathematical models for decision support. They take classes in economics, management, computers science, and math (and of course aeronautical engineering, astronautical engineering and all of the other required Air Force Academy courses). They are especially familiar with math programming (e.g., optimization), simulation, queuing analysis, decision trees, and mathematical forecasting. In recent years, teams have worked on a wide-variety of projects including scheduling pilots and airspace, improving an elementary school’s student pick-up process, and creating a model to simulate opposing pitchers for our AF Baseball team. If you have business problems/decisions/questions to solve/make/answer, relevant data available to analyze, and the time to work with a group of students over the next year, this could be a great opportunity to leverage the expertise of our students and faculty members! I'm especially interested in finding project sponsors in the local Colorado Springs or Denver areas since they provide easier opportunities for in-person interactions. Prospective project sponsors need to submit a written project proposal to me by August 1st. The best proposals will pitch the projects to the cadets later in August. Send me a message and I'll gladly reach out to you with additional info and project proposal guidance.

These projects will add value to your business and will provide a wonderful experience for the capstone group. To my network: if you have a business problem you would like solved then this is a great opportunity to match with a great group of professionals!

As a Mgt major; I didn’t have the opportunity to take as many OR classes as I would’ve liked to. But it was Joe Wilck’s OR introduction course my 3deg year that always stuck with me. Especially the part about the keeper league fantasy football, and last place gets booted out forever that he was a part of. Talk about a FFL punishment!?? Huge OR fan, and best to the cadets who take that path!
