BUILD a bridge: JoAnne (Jo) Bass — The advice I give everyone is that years before you separate or retire, ask yourself what is the next Why in your life. What do you want to do in this new part of your journey. When we find this Why, we can begin to build bridges toward that goal, so that when we leave the Air Force, it will be a much easier transition. Otherwise, it could feel like we are being left at the curb. This understanding needs to be given to all military personnel way before they get out.

One week post retirement… ?? I took this picture earlier this week before the movers pulled up, and the hustle and bustle began. It occurred to me (at this very moment), that while I’m a huge fan & champion of the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) along with the many resources it offers…what I don’t remember is a block of instruction specifically focused on the MENTAL ASPECT of transition. Yes…we have friends that have gone through it…yes, we are given resources and people to talk to…but TRANSITION hits folks differently…and can be a range of emotions. (Whether E-1 or O-10) ?? Perhaps this is an area we could spend more time. I’m curious on YOUR thoughts and experiences. And to my friends within the DoD and VA…this may be an opportunity to listen and learn. Building Content Systems for B2B Founders | Sharing insights from military service that grow businesses
Happy Veterans Day to all my sisters and brothers in arms. Some valuable insights from my time. 1. Deliberate development of service members is valuable to your company. Why? Because as military leaders we have to understand people’s strengths and weaknesses. Then place them in the most advantageous space for them to excel. While they excel, we have to develop them further to be able to lead the next generation of service members. This cycle repeats and it something veterans take with them after departing service. 2. Working with people from all over. We are a force made of people from every background. We learn to adapt, understand and communicate across things that would normally divide or slow the civilian population. Adaptability and being able to understand others is a major strength veteran possess. For Veterans Day this year, I challenge you to not only thank a Veteran. It’s always for us to hear that. But, have a conversation with a veteran in your work center. Ask about what they learned in the military and ask what was the best part for them. You will get a good story. If you want to laugh ask them about basic training. Reflecting back and telling those stories you may laugh until you cry. #military #veterans

My own Military-to-Civilian transition takeways: 1. Finding a job was a lot harder than I thought, despite starting the search early. 2. The "easy" path of finding work with prime defense contractors was anything but "easy": their hiring timelines were very slow, their recruiters mostly unresponsive. They're inundated with candidates that look just like me. 3. The weight of financial uncertainty can be crushing, especially with younger kids in tow. Any long hiring timelines make this even worse. 4. The financial strength of military retirement compensation was lower than I expected, especially in this economy. 5. Transitioning care of acute, specialty care medical issues from AD Tricare to the VA (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs) is nearly impossible: the VA's "start from scratch" approach before referring you to specialty care invalidates years of progress. 6. Spouses give up a lot to follow their military member around, and they have expectations of how well you're going to do in the civilian job market. Aligning those earning expectations with your reality is massively important. 7. The transition process is indeed a process: it takes a lot time, effort, and patience. Get help everywhere you can. #militarytransition

Culture Transformation & Organizational Psychologist- Defense Health Agency/ DoD | Olympus Strategies, Owner | VA 2023 Woman Veteran Trailblazer of the Year
Congratulations on your huge transition and I agree wholly. I did my dissertation on Women Veterans Identity during their service, during transition, and afterwords and we can do a lot better at assisting folks. I refer to this as a reverse boot camp, where we did such a great job breaking down our previous identities and establishing a military one, we don’t establish a civilian/veteran one until we’re already well in the thick of it (it meaning everything our foreign selves are doing to deal with what our foreign lives are now throwing at us). This is a huge catalyst for the unbelievable rates of anxiety, stress, depression, suicide, unemployment, substance abuse, and homelessness. Identity rebuilding absolutely should be a focus! Many of the women I spoke with were grateful for all the Veteran Service Organizations and found it overwhelming. We need more guidance and support on a tailored approach before exiting as well. This transition period before exiting should start as soon as possible and be led by people who have already experienced this, not just active duty personnel. No offense to them but it’s not their experience yet. A veteran mentorship program is another way to support people by guiding them through the process and being assigned a person well before transition. What do you all think? #militarytransition #veterans #airforce #airforceveteran #army #armyveteran #navy #navyveteran #marinecorps #marinecorpsveteran #coastguard #coastguardveteran #veteran #veteranshelpingveterans

Transitioning from the #military — a closed community/social/personnel system(/world) that bakes #teams into its every fabric (building them rapidly; trusting them quickly; relying on them heavily) — means moving into an open system(/world) where “team” means … something else entirely. That transition can feel entirely unmooring. Dislocating. Disorienting. (Candidly, I’m encountering some semblance of this myself, right now — even as a civilian) So. (Especially for those in my network who’ve not worked in/for/with the military) Some suggestions, to try to help — ? Look out for transitioning-from-the-military teammates (whether it’s been weeks or years — or even decades) and check in on them. Make and cultivate connections. ? Don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions: (How) Has it been for you, leaving the #militarycommunity? How has it been for your family? Your battle buddies? What do you miss most? Who’s on your team, now? ? Listen (/Learn!). Service members have so much deep knowledge about building and sustaining strong teams. All kinds of workplaces can benefit from that (often, hard-earned) wisdom. A bit of my own context — After growing up without any real exposure to the military, I somehow stumbled into a “baby doc” job with the #army, straight out of grad school. I thought I’d stay a year or two, tops. Looking in the rearview mirror now — gleefully barreling down the exit lane — I’m starting to see why I stayed for a decade. Why I’ll almost certainly find my way back again, at some point, back onto that crazy highspeed highway. So much of that “why” is because I loved the pervasive sense of #teamwork so deeply (necessarily) embedded in every element. Because of the battle buddies I made (and miss). Because of the sense of #belonging — to the mission, to the collective, to each other. Thank you JoAnne (Jo) Bass, for your courage and candor, in starting this critical conversation. (((Caveat: There are also — of course —problematic aspects, with dangerous implications & deeply entrenched roots (#culture), associated with the military being such a closed system(/world). But. Both — many — things can be true, concurrently, contradictorily; somehow.)))
