Shining a spotlight on the importance of relatable role models in education, and how you can build a sustainable pipeline for your learners.

One of my Year 11s inspired my latest blog for Future First by reminding me that young people are trying to see their future selves in “a job” often without any idea of what that actually might look like. It is vital, particularly for neurodivergent young people, that they are given the opportunity to see what workplaces actually look, sound and feel like. Maybe technology is the key to making this feasible for younger children to keep their ideas broad throughout Primary and Secondary school? #augmentedreality #virtualreality #workexperience

According to the National Institutes of Health, "School-based programs are positively associated with stable employment and full-time work while work-based programs most consistently increase the likelihood that youth with disabilities will be employed in jobs that provide fringe benefits. Analyses also indicate that – once individuals with disabilities are stably employed – they can be employed in “good” jobs that provide employee benefits." The Transition Academy put this research into action by partnering with Diversity Placement Services and Central High School to provide summer jobs for students at Central High School, Hogan Preparatory Academy and the Kauffman School. For 71% of the hard working youth, it was their first job. Career talk with 4th-8th graders from Socorro ISD was a success! What was made clear is that it’s crucial to start discussing the range of opportunities available to students, especially in fields that will be vital in the coming decades. Given the rapidly evolving job market, especially with the rise of green jobs and roles focused on climate and sustainability, it’s clear that today’s students need to be aware of these emerging fields. The workforce of the future will not only require technical expertise but also a broad range of skills and perspectives, including those focused on thought leadership, policy, and justice. Integrating discussions about climate and technology careers into career showcases can help prepare students for these future opportunities. It’s also essential to emphasize the importance of diversity in these fields, as marginalized communities often face the greatest challenges from climate change and thus have a vital role in shaping solutions and policies. After Saturday's career showcase, it was made apparent that Peek Counsel can play a pivotal role in developing a climate career pipeline for students in our community, for our voices are needed more than ever in those spaces.?
