Sisvel President Mattia Fogliacco moderated a plenary today at #IPBCGlobal entitled Europe's Tectonic Shift. The session's panellists were: Lyse Brillouet of Orange; Naoise Gaffney of GH Research; Dr. Sophie Pasquier of Philips; and Richard Vary of Bird & Bird. It's a common criticism of these kinds of session - and a fair one to an extent - that it's basically all about preaching to the converted. Everyone on the panel broadly agrees and so does everyone in the audience. Nothing is achieved. But here's the thing: these panellists know what they are talking about; they are in the market, they understand how it works; they can identify bottlenecks, flaws and problems, as well as opportunities. When they say there are very serious issues with the SEP licensing regulation, for example, the smart thing is to listen to them rather than to shut them out, as has happened up to now. These people share the Commission's objectives - transparency, efficiency and predictability in SEP licensing - but they are deeply concerned about the legislation's proposed solutions. SMEs are likely to be exposed to more, not lower, overheads and costs as a result of it; there will probably be suits at the CJEU about denial of property rights and access to justice; the ability to find agile, flexible market solutions to specific challenges is likely to be hindered; extended uncertainty that hampers dealmaking is almost certain; the EUIPO could well be overextended; and so on. If you fear all these things and more are likely to be the result of implementing the regulation in its current form, you are duty bound to scream it from the rooftops relentlessly in the hope that at some point someone who matters will finally start to hear. Yes, it's frustrating that a lot of industry events do tend to be repetitive, but the alternative is silence. And silence is a dereliction of duty. Richard Vary put it best. Europe is at a fork in the road, he said. The choice is either to follow a path in which a tried and tested system is interpreted and improved by the UPC, so ensuring ongoing European leadership in the FRAND/SEP world; or to take the other route with an unamended regulation, in which case the baton of leadership will pass to the likes of India, China and even the UK. The Commission and EU member states need to confront that reality. It cannot be wished away.

Great discussion with Aurelien Portuese re: the mess in the #EU and US economic relationship and how President-elect Trump can fix it. Key suggestions: Take a similar approach as with Canada (“US must adopt a forceful pushback”); call an urgent meeting of US-EU Trade and Technology Council; and build an a strong international base for #DOGE in Europe
The US-EU economic relationship has been vitally important and beneficial to both parties for decades. Today, it is under great stress from #EU attacks on US companies. At the link below, Lexington’s Paul Steidler discusses the situation and steps that President-elect #Trump should take with Dr. Aurelien Portuese, a renowned international competition and antitrust expert with The GW Competition & Innovation Lab at The George Washington University. ???????????????? ???????? ???????????????????? - ???????????????? ???? ?????? ???????????????? ?????????????? I watched this video below (Press conference by President von der Leyen on the next College of Commissioners) and found it highly interesting to see how Mrs. President introduced the new commissioners by breaking away from the usual siloed mentality regarding professional background and gender. It was amuzing to see people struggling to grasp how individuals, despite being highly educated and experienced, were offered roles "outside their field." This felt so relevant to polymathy! Kudos to Ursula von der Leyen for pushing this shift in mindset! The transition to a polymath approach is happening. So, what is exactly happening? ??) ???????????? ???? ????????????? ???????????????? ???????????????????? ???????? ?????? ????????????????-????????: The selection of Europen Commissioners was not solely based on professional backgrounds but focused on their ability to manage in a global context while prioritizing European interests. This approach ensures that the team is equipped to handle issues with a strong emphasis on Europe’s collective perspective. ??)???????????????????????????? ???????????????????? ?????? ???????????? ???????????? ???????????? ????????????????: Many portfolios within the European Commission are highly interconnected, and the traditional siloed mentality must be abandoned. The Commission’s work is structured around core priorities such as prosperity, security, and democracy, all underpinned by the need for competitiveness in the face of transitions like decarbonization and digitalization. A more fluid and coordinated approach is necessary, reflecting the interdependent nature of modern challenges. Von der Leyen emphasized the need for cooperation among commissioners, as issues like security, the economy, climate, and people are all interconnected. ?? Quote: "As I said a main principle is coordination because reality you cannot put reality in little boxes and separate the different topics from each other. In reality everything is intertwined and interelated and therefore all the Commissioners all the Executive Vice Presidents have to work very closely together and of course they are in all the aspects overlaps depending on from which angle you look at".? These ideas capture the broader strategic direction and structural changes introduced under von der Leyen’s leadership. Looks like a great approach to me! #polymathmindset #polymathicthinking #ursulavonderleyen #europeancommission #interconnectedportfolios #breakingbarriers #europeanness #collaborativemindset #digitaltransition #polymathapproach #futureofeurope #silobreaking #leadershipshift (thank you, dear Maria Santacaterina for the tip!)

?? New Publication! ?? My working paper, part of the ERC-funded project Twentieth Century International Economic Thinking and the Complex History of Globalisation (ECOINT), led by Prof. Glenda Sluga at the European University Institute, has just been published. You can access it here: https://lnkd.in/dBJav8-t This paper is the first part of a study reconstructing the work of Emmy Freundlich, a key figure in the women’s cooperative movement between the two World Wars, within the economic and financial bodies of the League of Nations. It focuses on the 1920s, particularly the 1927 International Economic Conference, where Freundlich was the only woman among the government delegations. The women’s cooperative movement proposed a vision of global economic governance based on democratic principles, blending traditional cooperative values (grassroots control, consumer protection, and reducing commercial intermediaries) with the issue of women’s economic emancipation. Freundlich’s vision positioned cooperatives as the tool through which domestic workers, especially middle-class housewives excluded from labour representation, could change the world.

The recent Illinois trade mission to Japan is a prime example of how #TeamIllinois is making the case to #BeinIllinois on the global stage and a broader strategy to build connections and drive #FDI. "Our vision is to make sure that companies around the world, especially some of our largest trading partners, are aware of the new Illinois," Intersect Illinois Chairman John Atkinson writes in Crain's Chicago Business. I believe we are just not ready to learn from the destruction happening because of environmental disasters... and still we want to invent some or other thing and now technology is getting inside the oceans believing the oceans were not disturbed till now..... how much problems we are inviting is immeasurable. However, one of the advantages of having technology inside is that we would be alarmed if there is any disaster predicted and our (EOC) emergency command centres will be on proactive mode and not reactive mode. Many other benefits but cannot ignore many other triggers to the disaster as well.
It works at up to 3000 metres deep, beaming up data on the ocean. Learn more about our entrepreneurs attending the Annual Meeting of the New Champions June 25-27: https://ow.ly/oEPy50So4nk? #AMNC24 WSENSE UpLink - World Economic Forum Friends of Ocean Action
