Big win for clean water!?The EPA just made a big move—requiring lead pipes to be removed within 10 years. This is thanks to all of us who raised our voices and pushed for change! But here’s the thing—10 years is still too long. No one should have to wait that long for safe drinking water. This is a huge step in the right direction for the over 9 million homes across the country that are still supplied by lead pipelines. But the work isn’t over. At Conservation Law Foundation, we’ll be keeping a close eye to make sure this actually happens and that no community is left behind. Here in New England, we’re still dealing with lead from old paint and construction dust too, so we need to tackle it all. It's encouraging to see the EPA taking strong steps to address lead contamination in drinking water through the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements. The staggering number of lead service lines still in use across the US underscores the urgency of this effort. The combination of regulatory action and nearly $26 billion from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law presents a real opportunity for transformative change. As a professional in the environmental sector, I’ve seen firsthand how vital it is to modernize our infrastructure to ensure safe, clean water for all communities. The projected job creation from water infrastructure investments is also a huge win, further strengthening the positive impact of this initiative.

Today, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a final rule requiring drinking water systems across the county to?identify & replace lead pipes within 10 years. The Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (#LCRI) also require more rigorous testing of drinking water and a lower threshold requiring communities to take action to protect people from lead exposure in water. In addition, the final rule improves communication within communities so that families are better informed about the risk of lead in drinking water; the location of lead pipes; and plans for replacing them. Alongside the LCRI, EPA is announcing $2.6 billion in newly available drinking water infrastructure funding through the IIJA. This funding will flow through the drinking water state revolving funds (DWSRF) and is available to support lead pipe replacement and inventory projects. 49% of the funding must be provided to disadvantaged communities as grant funding or principal forgiveness that does not have to be repaid. #EPA #rulemaking #regulationwatch #IIJA #BidenAdministration

Everyone wants to see lead pipes removed from drinking water service lines, and EPA’s recently released Lead and Copper Rule Improvements along with funding in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law are big steps forward towards that #waterquality goal.?Details like how private property versus utility-owned piping is handled and large remaining funding gaps are covered will ultimately determine how much cost gets passed directly on to ratepayers.
