Last week we had the honour to provide historical perspectives on certain topics of warfighting during our Army Commander's Griffin Seminar 2025: Being Ready in 2030. Together with Serge Blom we eloborated on the development of the components of fighting power of the American army during the Cold War. Jointly with, among others, Jack Watling and former Ukranian Army Commander Valery Zaluzhny we touched on topics: How do we prepare in a period from crisis to potential conflict, future force development, Interoperability and common army vision.

"World-class, Fair and Consistent" -- the U.S. Army Command Assessment Program lives up to its motto. In my second iteration as part of the Cadre team - I am more of a believer with each successive rotation. As my U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) teammates may appreciate - this program has roots in theory, history, doctrine and practice. Its bedrock foundation is the doctrine within ADP 6-22 and FM 6-22; specifically the Army Leadership Requirements Model. The results of CAP inform the Job Performance Panel (JPP) that incorporates a comprehensive, multi-point assessment to augment an officer's performance file. Channeling Maclean, it assesses all of a leader's tools, from multiple perspectives, and identifies strengths and developmental needs. As with any tool, it is not perfect and people will question its utility and its results. It will evolve. Ultimately, you can't go wrong in applying a method that seeks to provide more and better information to inform some of the most consequential decisions our institutional Army will make - selecting senior leaders that will command hundreds and thousands of soldiers.
