It is so great to have Luis F. González, PLA, ASLA, AICP on the UPP Team. He is always out and about learning more about Oakland and the Bay Area.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending a powerful community outreach meeting focused on the Vision 980 Project, hosted by Support Oakland Artists and The Center for Black Health and Equity. The discussion centered around the future of the I-980 Freeway, a structure that has long separated West Oakland from the rest of the city. The meeting was an excellent example of how community engagement should be conducted. The commitment to bring together the community and creating space for these critical conversations is truly commendable. I also want to acknowledge the Black Panther Party Museum for providing a meaningful space that holds historical significance, further enriching the dialogue. The Vision 980 Project is about much more than redesigning a freeway—it’s about righting past wrongs and moving towards a future that prioritizes equitable development, environmental justice, and community healing. I am excited to see how this project unfolds and the positive impact it will have on reconnecting West Oakland with broader economic opportunities and innovative urban design. Kudos to everyone involved, especially Caltrans, its partners, and Supervisor Carson’s office and his partners, for championing this initiative and ensuring that the voices of the community are heard and respected. With the collective energy and dedication I witnessed, I am confident that transformative change is on the horizon. #UrbanPlanning #Vision980 #CommunityDevelopment #EnvironmentalJustice #EquityInDesign #Oakland #InfrastructureReimagined
