The work of the Urban League does. Chris and I have had the opportunity to meet and talk about how we can partner together to deliver for all the families throughout Union County and make sure that we provide real opportunities for families. And that's what this all is about. So tonight, celebrating the work that you have all have done, the awardees, congratulations on all that you do to move Union County forward and such an honor to partner with you and the Urban League of Union County. Two main initiatives that we have right now is our housing program which we've been a HUD certified agency for over 50 years and with that housing program that is where majority of our clients come from today for in need of housing counseling. They are in need of rental assistance, mortgage assistance, eviction prevention as evictions have been at an all time high over the past two years. We help people with utilities, we help them with food assistance, we help them literally try to stay in their homes. And keep the foundations for their families, but then we also help them to start a new journey by becoming first time home buyers as well. And so we have a 8 hour workshop that's over the course of three days that they get certified and they go through the process so they can qualify for better first time home buyer products and services that a lot of our partners offered here. So we also help them with financial empowerment. And I'm excited to announce that we have launched a financial opportunity center. With the County of Union and we have a financial coach now to help people through this process so that they can build their credit, they can say they can budget and we can really get moved to the next level. And then we have our reentry program, and I'd like to say that that's really our niche, that with our reentry program that we help people get second chances. We help those who are formally incarcerated and help them to build a new life once they're released, once they're out in this world. And a lot of times it's hard to do so they're lost, they don't know where to go. They may or may not have family support. So we are. That support for them, we are full case management and I mean wrap around services. We help with every aspect of the clients. We can swing back and we have to do what's right and let the systems catch up because quite frankly, no one can love us more than we love us. And so it is going to be necessary that we not just think about how we can show up, that we not just volunteer our time, but that we become partners, life partners with organizations that have 10. 1520 years, 80 years in the game, doing the work of ensuring that our people are going to have what they need in order to thrive, regardless of whether or not the rest of society decides to support. So as we think about how we move forward and as we think about the work of this organization and how we show up mightily to support, I want us to think about what your individual purpose is. What is your individual passion? How do you bring that to bear in this moment? And I'm going to ask that you do three things. And I ask my audience to do this every single day when I'm on the air. I ask that you think about how your purpose. Aligns with the needs of our people. And then I need you to walk in it with your back straight. I need you to think about how you can tap into your Harriet Tubman, Marcus Garvey, not Turner kind of love. So you can figure out how to center the needs of people who look like us. How to center the needs of black people in a way that is going to allow you to tap into your privilege, your power, your resources, and meet the moment. And I need you to figure out how you can find as many good things as you can possibly do, like supporting institutions like this. And then figure out how you can do it every single day. We're talking about the need for institutional change. We're talking about the need for structural development within our community. We're talking about the need for partners who aren't just going to be here when it's a gala. And I know you all know this because we heard the names of those of you who are doing the work. But we're going to ask also that you partner with us tomorrow and the day after and the day after, and in January and in February and in March and beyond. Because the reality is the structural. Depression that our communities are facing is so significant that it is going to require ingenuity, it's going to require passion, and it's going to require the type of Harriet Tubman love that allowed that elder, that ancestor, to go back into the pit of the abyss and to go back into the pit of the abyss and to go back and to go back and to go back until we have the freedom that our people so richly deserve.

Join us in Pathways, a free program that supports arts and heritage workers as they learn about equity and access, and integrate this work into their organizations. Pathways is a program developed by our community to serve our community! Connect with over 70 organizations across the province as we support and learn from each other. Pathways provides access to resources, workshops and peer support networks for an entire year. Applications are now open for the September 2024 intake of the Pathways program. Every organization is unique and serves a specific community. Pathways is designed to be impactful for organizations and individuals working in different contexts, with different interests, and at different points in their work towards equity. Whether you are strongly invested in equity and would like support to access more costly advanced learning opportunities, or are just beginning and would value one-on-one guidance as you get started; this program may be a good fit for you and your organization. We recognize arts workers/volunteers are balancing their limited capacities and the desire and expectation to do equity work in meaningful and sustainable ways. So excited to get started with Adaptavist, it's fantastic that they are committed to supporting children in remote and marginalised areas receive an education. On International Women's Day it's a perfect opportunity to highlight the importance of even a basic level of education for girls where we work. ?? Educated mothers are 50% more likely to immunise their children and their children are x2 more likely to survive past the age of 5. ???When 10% more girls attend school, that country’s GDP increases by 3% ???Girls’ Education = Climate resilience. Countries’ resilience to climate disasters significantly improves with every additional year of education that girls acquire.
