We are beyond elated to finally announce our keynote speaker for the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle’s 23rd Annual Breakfast: ‘Era of Essential Service’! This year’s keynote is Academy award nominated, Emmy nominated, and Golden Globe-winning actor, filmmaker, and activist: Taraji P. Henson! ?? Henson quickly rose to fame after her breakout performance in the critically acclaimed 2005 film ‘Hustle & Flow’. Following an impressive accumulation of acting credits in films, TV and more, Henson wrapped her iconic run as “Cookie Lyon” in Fox’s hit musical drama ‘Empire’ in 2020, which has earned her three Emmy nominations, a Golden Globe award, a Critics Choice award, and three BET awards. While many regard Henson as an accomplished actor, she is also a chart-topping author and seasoned community philanthropist. In October 2016, Henson released her New York Times bestselling novel “Around The Way Girl,” a memoir about her family and friends, her determination to make it to Hollywood, and the importance of living your own truth. Henson, along with her best friend and foundation partner, Tracie Jade, recently co-hosted the Facebook Watch series on mental health called Peace of Mind with Taraji, for which they received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for “Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host.” We couldn’t have asked for someone who embodies our values and our vision more than Ms. Henson. Our community is eager to welcome her with open arms! Join us for an unforgettable experience on Friday, November 22, 2024 at the Seattle Convention Center Summit! ??? In 2010, Damien Chazelle was just a student at Harvard with a dream to change the film industry. A few short years later, his movie La La Land raked in $446 million worldwide. It also took home 6 of the 14 Oscars it was nominated for, tying for the most Academy Award nominations for a single film ever, and it beat out every one of its competitors at the Golden Globes. Not bad for the new kid in town, huh? Damien chose not to buy into the idea that “the jazz musical was an extinct genre” or that because James Cameron and Steven Spielberg were already making movies, he should settle for a career doing something else. He committed to becoming a director and bringing La La Land to life, despite all the things working against him. Maybe you haven’t started your Personal Branding journey yet because you believe you’re too late to the party. Maybe you think your industry is too crowded... Or you believe your competition has your niche on lock, so there’s no room for you... Or you think there’s no chance that you’ll succeed when so many other people are already killing it online... Well, I’ve got news for you. There’s actually never been a better time to start. You have access to bigger audiences, better tools, and more opportunities than ever before. La La Land never would have become such a breakout hit if Damien Chazelle hadn’t written the script. And you’ll never know what’s possible for you if you quit before you get started. ???????? ?????????? ?????? ???????? ???????????????? ?????? ???????? ?????? ???????????

?? Unlock Drama: Amplifying Voices from Within ?? At Unlock Drama, we believe our participants are not just attendees, but experts. Each workshop begins by engaging them in discussions about issue-based topics—identifying triggers, consequences, and the wider community impact. Our participants’ lived experiences and insights are invaluable, crafting narratives that resonate deeply. Through collaborative creativity, their stories and perspectives are transformed into compelling theatre pieces by our skilled facilitators. The result? Raw, real, and uniquely impactful performances that echo the voices of those who know the stories best. Their expertise makes each piece of theatre not only a performance but a profound expression of real-life experiences. That’s the power of authentic storytelling—current, relevant, and one-of-a-kind, tailored to the voices of each participant group. These performances are shared within custodial and community settings, spreading awareness and understanding of the topics explored. This not only educates audience members—be they peers or staff—but also instills a profound sense of pride in our participants. How wonderful to receive this article from my friend and colleague, Jeanefer Jean Charles, MBE! It is an article by Sophie Akbar on her journey as a producer. https://lnkd.in/dzJ6X8Bj Her role at Without Walls is an outcome of the work Jeanefer and I did as consultants with the outdoor arts consortium in 2020-21. A chance for me to reflect on the change-making work we achieved with creative leaders in the industry, gathering their perceptions, thoughts, and solutions to resolve the complex challenges faced, and how to create a healthier, more equitable industry moving forward. How often do we reflect on what has been achieved, where the learning and opportunities are, and who holds those conversations? After a 360 review of Without Walls, we focused on the recommendation of low-hanging fruit with short-term and low-cost impact, along with stretch goals such as investing in talent for the long term. In Without Wall's case, a high amount of exemplary practices and authentic relationships were already in place. Receiving this article also resonates with conversations from this week about the long-term commitment to change in practice by investing in under-represented talent. On a deeper level, the brilliant work that Sophie is doing in the sector reminds me of the legacy and messages that Director Abdul Shayek shared through the consultation process, his work at Tara Theatre, and his activism for change across the industry. Successful change happens when we start with the low-hanging fruit—what can we implement straight away that builds momentum, who needs to lead that change —and what is required to make a longer-lasting impact? Thank you, Without Walls Consortium, for actively listening, the long-term commitment and the appetite for embracing change of doing things differently.

Friends, family, and colleagues—I’m sharing something that’s been a labor of love, reflection, and truth for nearly three years. It’s a film I’ve co-produced called White with Fear, and it couldn’t be more urgent right now. I’m humbled to have been part of this project, and now, it’s time to share it with you. If you’re in New York, White with Fear will be showing at Cinema Village from October 25th through the 31st. And this is just the start—more showings will follow, and a TV broadcast is coming next year. This film is not just about exposing the darkness—it’s about sparking the conversations we need to have to build something better. This documentary reveals how politicians and media have weaponized racial fear in America to gain power—dividing communities, inflaming tensions, and deepening mistrust. These are stories told by people who lived it, who were there in the rooms where decisions were made. It’s a film about how we got here, but more importantly, how we can choose a different path forward. I don’t ask often, but I’m asking now—if you understand what time it is in America, share this with those in the New York area who need to see it. Because we can’t afford to look away from this moment. Details and tickets at: whitewithfear.com Thank you for always standing with me, for believing in the work, and for being part of the change. #WhiteWithFear #CivilRights #RacialJustice #InclusiveDemocracy #Documentary #NYC #CinemaVillage #FightTheFearTogether #ComingSoon

Meet the cast of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations! ?? We asked Alex Brandel some questions about the show: Tell us a little bit about your characters. I play Mr. Wopsle, Compeyson, and Herbert Pocket. Mr. Wopsle is an over-articulating church clerk who is very proud and cannot help himself from interjecting an “Amen” into any conversation. Compeyson is a true villain to his core which makes him just a blast to bring to life, to the dismay of the other characters. Last but certainly not least is Herbert Pocket, who is a true best friend to Pip and always has Pip’s best interests at heart. What are some of the unique challenges that you've encountered during rehearsals? When playing more than one role in a play, especially those that contrast each other so much, it’s important to make sure that they can clearly be told apart. The way Mr. Wopsle walks and talks is much different than how Herbert and Compeyson do and vice versa. Drilling down to who each of these three characters are and how they interact with the world has been an interesting and rewarding challenge to overcome. Great Expectations is one of Charles Dickens' most enduring stories, adapted many times in a variety of media. What remains timeless about this classic coming-of-age tale? The comedy! Going into Great Expectations I really knew nothing about this show or the original book it’s based on. There are so many jokes and bits that happen so naturally throughout this play and it’s amazing how easy it is to find them and how well they still land today more than 150 years later. What's something an audience member should know before they see this play? The classics are classics for a reason, and this is one of them. Great Expectations could take place in any time period and still be just as relatable as it was when it was originally written. This is a story of chance encounters, how our reactions to those encounters shape us as people, and learning what we actually want in life, instead of what we expected to. Charles Dickens' Great Expectations runs November 1st-10th at the New Hazlett Theater. My post has been triggered by Michelle Raymond post about never sharing your #BIGDREAMS with the wrong person. I couldn’t agree with you more. When I shared the concept of https://lnkd.in/eUXmPRRZ with some people whom I thought would understand, I received a lot of pushback. The reasons ranged from, "It’s never happened in rural Jamaica before," to "Film festivals wouldn’t work here," and "People have no idea what it is." There were also concerns about where the funding would come from. Truth be told, I listened to some of these doubts for a bit, and it made me nervous—imposter syndrome kicked in. I began to question why I thought I could execute something so massive, including attracting Hollywood stars and international attention. But here's the reality: The Black River Film Festival was a raving success! We had visitors from Europe, North America, Africa, and beyond. Now, we’re planning the second staging. What did I learn from this? 1.Never share your dreams with the wrong people. 2.Remember, it’s your vision—God gave it to you, and you’re the only one with the right prescription to see it through. What are your thoughts on sharing your big ideas with the wrong person? PS.that is me serving ?? cocktails at #blackriverfilmfestival. #BlackRiverFilmFestival #Visionary #DreamBig #BelieveInYourself #ImposterSyndrome #SuccessStory #FaithInAction #EntrepreneurLife #RuralJamaica #FilmFestival #HollywoodDreams #PurposeDriven #GodsPlan #DreamsDoComeTrue

Awesome amplification by Ryan Gosling. Here’s why it’s extra important. Research conducted & shared in Sally Helgesen & Marshall Goldsmith ‘s book How Women Rise, reveal that: ????Women are more likely to build up others & self sacrifice. Women tend to talk about winning as a collaborative endeavor ?? Women need to fight to maintain confidence ?? Women need to remind themselves why they’re deserving What are ways men can transform toxic & exclusionary male behavior? Stay tuned! #equityandinclusion #shiftconversationalhabits #equitymatters #amplifyher
??What does it look like to sponsor, and amplify others voices from a place of power & privilege?: ??Ryan Gosling’s full statement “I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought I’d being saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken. But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement. Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees. Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.” https://lnkd.in/eUYrSU5M
