Sam Altman’s praise for Deepseek is certainly noteworthy, but for me, the model represents something even more profound: a breakthrough in how we can leverage AI in education. It’s not just another powerful model; it’s a flexible model, one that finally allows us to experiment and tailor AI to the specific needs of K12 classrooms. We know that K12 education thrives on nuance. A model that works brilliantly in one context might be completely inappropriate in another. Sometimes, the complexity needs to be dialed down, simplifying the output for younger learners. Previously, these kinds of adjustments were possible but costly. The pre-trained models were powerful yet inflexible. DeepSeek’s open-source nature changes everything. It opens the door to a new era of customization. We can now take this powerful model and refine it, adjust it, and shape it to perfectly fit the needs of our customers – the students and teachers in real classrooms. And that at affordable costs. But DeepSeek's open-source nature presents significant risks. Harnessing its potential while mitigating its dangers requires a collaborative approach that involves developers, researchers, policymakers, and the broader community. Let's work together!
