There is something special about knowing that we have a little more in the tank to share with others. In Phase Four: Review Weekly of the SWORD Inclusion System for Boards, we start bridging the expertise gaps even beyond the industry. --- INCLUSIVE EXPANSION: To expand our perspective, we seek industry expertise from complementary industries that can expand our reach. --- BOARD EXPANSION: Recruit expertise from strategy, marketing, operations, and finance divisions. --- EXPERTISE EXPANSION: Attempt to look beyond the C-suite to engage individuals with more time to offer relevant experience. Whilst it is easy to see the progress of tackling a lack of diversity in business as a linear one, this is not always the case and so we’d like to raise a point. This year there have been a number of backward steps. The Tech Talent Charter announced that it will stop its work in August after finding that D&I initiatives were no longer considered a priority. The campaign found similar issues within the advertising industry. In 2021 73% of advertising execs were white, by 2022 it was 90%. A 2024 report on NHS comms positions have noted a similar backward trend. The point we have to raise is that to help the underrepresented get into the workplace, we need to be proactive. These issues will not resolve themselves. "This is a difficult one to answer because so many women in my life inspire me daily, but I would have to say the CEO of Govplace, Simone Feldman, has been one of the most influential in my career. Her confidence, humility, and kindness as a leader are traits to be admired. The patience and guidance she has shown me, and others, has been instrumental to my professional and personal growth. I’ll always be grateful for her dedication to her team’s success and ensuring we are all truly heard." What does it mean to you to be a leader? "To me, leadership isn't about being the loudest voice in the room, it's about being the one that listens the most. True leadership is demonstrated through transparently acknowledging failures, learning from them, and embracing humility and open-mindedness. It's about inspiring others to explore their potential and fostering an environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive." What are your plans to pay it forward and support other women in the industry? "My growth was only possible due to people in the industry generously sharing their knowledge, experience, and having a genuine interest in helping me reach my career goals. This is how I’d like to pay it forward - by never withholding information and sharing everything I know to those who are seeking a similar career path. The finance department does not have to communicate why they are a necessary function of any successful organization. So it is a bit frustrating to be back in the position of advocacy for DEI initiatives after four years of momentum. We discussed this hurdle during our last roundtable. Leaders should focus on why this benefits their organization. Consider how retention impacts your bottom line and recruitment. Think about longevity; diversity is extremely important to Gen Zers in the workforce. #DEI is not just a title, or just three letters. It truly impacts an organization’s success and that’s what stakeholders care about.
