Time sure does fly when you’re having fun… Yesterday marked my 3 year anniversary in recruitment and 3 years of living in what is now my new home in Austin, Texas. What a ride it’s been and I couldn’t have picked a better city. Anyone that works in the staffing industry knows it is full of ups and downs, twists and turns, and never a dull moment. It is an industry I seemed to fall into, but couldn’t be more thankful for. I was talking with a colleague yesterday about the most important things you need to be successful in this line of work and it made me realize how much this industry has helped me uncover…an arsenal of skills and character traits buried that I didn’t know I possessed. Resilience, hard work, fearlessness, emotional intelligence, persistence, consistency, confidence, and organization are a few that come to mind. I’ve also made some pretty incredible friends along the way. Too many to tag, but you know who you are! So, while it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day stresses that come with staffing, after 3 years I wanted to take a second to recognize all of the important lessons, teachings, and friends I've gathered along the way. This job has changed my life, but not just in a monetary fashion. The things I’ve learned and the people I've met cannot be quantified or measured. They are priceless. I see lots of employers courting Gen Z. And you know what they say - if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! Gen Z, here’s my pitch for joining the fire and security industry: ? Job stability This industry is recession & pandemic resistant. Even if no one’s building new fire and safety structures, existing ones will need maintenance, and maintenance = stable recurring revenue. ? Opportunities for growth and challenges There’s ample room in this industry for younger generations to step up, learn quickly from leaders, and take the reins. And as the industry grows, you’ll have lots of opportunities to use your perspective to make a major impact. ? Making a difference Most importantly, working in fire and safety makes you feel good about keeping people and communities safe. You can’t put a price on that. When I was starting my career, I had no idea the fire protection industry even existed. I’m so glad I found out, and now I’d love to give the next generation the same opportunities that I got. Around a month into starting my job, my sister said to me: ‘You’re so much happier now.’ And she was right. I started out my career happy to do most jobs. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted or what a healthy workplace looked like. I was just happy to have a job. It was only when I landed my current role that I realized what a difference it makes to work: - With curious and driven people.? - In a role that I love. - In an industry that interests me.? - With an incredible product. And it’s all of those things that have made me so much happier and more confident. - My team makes me feel welcome and also pushes me to be better.? - The industry and role make work meaningful.? - The product is something believe in. It’s made me a better employee and a better marketer. It’s made me happier. I’m not trying to brag here. Just to show it makes a huge difference when you go from just being ‘happy to have a job’ to being happy BECAUSE of your job. If you’re in a role you don’t like you can find one you do.
