Seeking Advice! Post your best interview Q’s for sussing out personality types & work ethic. I’m recruiting college students every semester for a rolling internship and it’s becoming more challenging. I hate to chalk the issue up to an age/work ethic gap but it’s proving to be too true to ignore. I’ve been lucky to find some GREAT students in the past, of whom I am very proud, but it’s becoming more difficult to find good candidates each year. Any tips for me to update my interview strategy?

This week, I will be sharing insights on how to enhance your interview preparation by leveraging your resume effectively. Preparing for common interview questions like "greatest strength/weakness" or sharing a time of leadership can be challenging when transitioning from your resume to formulating answers on the spot. With numerous questions to anticipate, it can be overwhelming to strategize responses for each one. One effective approach I've learned is to take each point on your resume and list each type of experience you had for said point. This method shifts the focus from memorizing answers to understanding how your past experiences align with the interview inquiries. By recalling why each item is on your resume, you streamline the process of formulating responses. For instance, during my internship at Ventures, I highlighted skills such as teamwork, rapid response, communication, development, and documentation. When faced with a question on handling stressful work situations, I refer to this list and choose the relevant experience – in this case, rapid response. Remembering the rationale behind listing these skills for Ventures simplifies the recall process during interviews. This systematic approach not only aids in preparing responses but also enhances your confidence by aligning your experiences with potential interview questions. This is the part where the recruiter wants to ease the interviewee into the actual interview and get a general idea of what they’re all about. Let me share with you a few tips on how to answer this question flawlessly: 1) Keep It Professional and Brief When answering, try to keep it under 1-2 minutes, at most. The hiring manager doesn’t want to know your entire life story. They don’t care about which kindergarten you went to, how your first internship went, or what you studied in high school. You want to stick to your main selling points that are relevant for the job. 2) Practice, But Don’t Memorize You’re bound to hear “tell me about yourself” in just about every interview. So, all you have to do is practice your answer a bit! Grab a friend and do a quick mock interview. Keep in mind, though, that you shouldn’t memorize your answer. Sure, it might seem like the safer option, but if you end up forgetting something in the interview, you might mess up your entire answer. Instead, come up with a general idea of what you’re going to talk about, memorize the structure, and just wing it! 3) Know Your Audience? Or, know thy interviewer. It’s important to keep in mind who you’re talking to. Is it the HR? Business manager? The hiring manager? The CTO? CMO? CEO? You might be wondering, why does this matter? Well, the thing is, each of these people expect a different answer. Let’s say you’re a software engineer, and you’re being interviewed by the HR manager. If you start going on and on about how much you love coding in Assembly, you’ve practically lost them. The HR manager doesn’t know anything about coding or assembly.They’re expecting a more generic answer about you, your career, and reasons for applying at the company. On the other hand, if you’re being interviewed by the CTO or the hiring manager, you can geek out as much as you want. 4) Remember W.A.P. (Work, Academic, Personal) Every good answer to “tell me about yourself” should consist of: Work - This should make up about 80% of your answer. Focus on your previous experience and accomplishments here. Academic - 10-15% of your answer should then be about your academic background (university, academic achievements, etc.). Personal - Finally the last 5-10% should be about you as a person, while still keeping it relevant to the company. What's next now that Round 1 for 2025 intake for MBA programs is almost over? Interviews! If you applied to schools like Kellogg, Yale, Tuck, Darden, Duke --- some of you might already have your interview invites (our candidates to these schools have received them). But how do you go about preparing for these interviews now? Receiving an interview invite from a top school is an impressive feat in itself. While top schools typically receive 5-10 applications for every seat available, if you reach the interview stage, you’ve already improved the odds significantly in your favor. But now its absolutely vital to nail the interview so you can claim your seat at your dream school! Some key steps to take: 1- Know your resume inside-out You absolutely need to know your resume, and be prepared to answer any questions which may come your way about it. 2- Know the interviewer Most international schools send shortlisted candidates information about their interviewer(s), at the very least their full names. Doing your homework is incredibly useful to make good conversation and will always be appreciated. 3- Make the right impression No matter how well you expressed yourself through your writing, your submitted application only represents you on paper. Your interview experience is the one opportunity you have to showcase your personality as well. 4- Practice, practice, practice After you’ve done all your prep, do at least one (but ideally more!) mock interviews. Calling all interns preparing for interviews! As someone who has been through the interview process, I'd like to share some insights. Remember, you don't have to be supremely gifted to make it through. Here are some tips based on my experience: - Being adaptive is key to success. You can't be gifted in everything, but being adaptable can take you a long way. - Communication is key. Resonate confidence through your communication skills to speak of your technical ability. Your communication skills are the book cover of your technical wisdom content. - Be courageous and don't be afraid to ask questions. Clarity always drives parity to the situation. - “work through what -> why-> how" as your framework to approach a problem scenario. Ask for the what side of the problem statement and try to understand why it's a problem before moving on to how to solve it. I have had good success following this framework in my career. - Don't see interviews as success or failure. Interviews are interactive sessions between two skilled individuals at different levels, trying to best judge the interviewee's relevance to the opportunity. No interview is a failure; each session teaches you something new. - Focus on system intelligence and understanding how a set of things work together. This will make you a better technologist asset.
