Krystale Littlejohn, a sociology associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, has worked to make significant strides in the field of reproductive health, rights, and justice. In Littlejohn’s latest book, Fighting Mad: Resisting the End of Roe v. Wade, she addresses the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs decision that overturned the nearly 50-year-old constitutional right to abortion in the US. Littlejohn hopes readers of Fighting Mad will feel inspired by the collective efforts to preserve abortion rights documented within the book. She aims to highlight the challenges as well as the resilience and determination of those fighting for reproductive justice. ?? LIEPP's latest Working Paper "From choice to capabilities: abortion and reproductive justice" is available online: bit.ly/3BUBR9D ? Choice has been foundational to movements supporting abortion rights. However, the focus on choice has been criticized by reproductive justice (RJ) movements, who advocate for a broader perspective encompassing the diversity and complexity of reproductive trajectories. The reproductive justice framework contends that reproductive freedom requires addressing intersecting social, and economic factors that impact individuals' ability and resources to make choices. This Working Paper argues that feminist economics and empirical research can expand our understanding of abortion beyond an individual act and a moment of choice. ?? Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), The New Republic #11July2024 : #Why #Abortion #Bans #Keep #Getting #Passed, #Even #Though #They’re #Unpopular "In a new op-ed published at The New Republic, PRRI CEO Melissa Deckman, Ph.D., examines the growth of restrictive abortion policies at the state level, noting that only 11% of residents in states that have essentially banned abortion agree that the procedure should be illegal in all cases, according to PRRI data. The disproportionate influence of more extreme voters in red states and the ascendancy of religious conservatives as Republican power brokers, however, explain the discrepancy between polling and policy." "Polls show voters don’t like restrictive abortion laws. But they also show a growing political divide on the issue." #Op-#ed, Melissa Deckman, Ph.D. , #CEO Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI)

Research shows the majority of American Muslims believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases. They join the majority of Jews, Catholics, and the non-affiliated in that belief. After the fall of Roe in 2022, reproductive rights are once again on the ballot. This week at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, abortion and reproductive rights will be heavily discussed, as they are main topics for Wednesday, August 21 at the convention. ISPU’s 2022 American Muslim Poll shed light on how various religious groups and the general public view abortion legality. Our research shows men and women of all faith and non-faith groups surveyed don’t significantly differ on their opinions on abortion legality. While relatively late, I would like to talk about an incredible opportunity I had this past February. I led a meeting with Vox: Planned Parenthood Generation Action, William & Mary’s Planned Parenthood-affiliated reproductive justice club, where I currently serve as secretary!? As a student in international relations interested in current events and human rights, I find it impossible to promote reproductive justice in the present without addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Generally, when one thinks about reproductive justice, one thinks of making abortion legal in the US and sometimes promoting access to contraception, and that is about it. The working definition used by Vox comes from the Sister Song Organization. It defines it as “The human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities.”? Reproductive justice is so much more than abortion access and extends across all borders. When adapting this definition, without a doubt, what is happening in Gaza is a matter of reproductive justice.? After spending weeks researching and finding as credible sources as possible to inform an audience with a wide range of prior knowledge, I led our 02/19 meeting! I was pleased with how it went, as we had around 35 W&M students and an assistant professor from W&M attend! At the end of my presentation, we had a thought-provoking discussion, and I enjoyed listening to my peers' thoughts on the topic. Improving my public speaking, advocacy, and closely following relevant foreign events are all professional and academic goals I am working on now, and moments like these show steps I am taking to progress. I have linked the presentation in this post for anyone interested! https://lnkd.in/eDdK4e_M

WE ARE ENTERTAINING OURSELVES TO DEATH BOOING IDIOTIC CLOWNS AND HAILING PAST HEROES A FAR LESS ENTERTAINING BUT MORE DANGEROUS SILENT COUP IS GOING ON 1) "By its own maneuvering, the modern Supreme Court has made itself the most powerful branch of government. Superior to Congress. Superior to the president. Superior to the states. Superior to precedent, procedure, and norms. In effect, superior to the people. Most talked about in this regard, of course, is the Court’s ending of long-established reproductive rights in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. But the assertion of extreme power extends well beyond the issue of abortion. https://lnkd.in/eSzqAfwj 2) One of the Supreme Court’s most consequential projects in the last several years, a project that took off after former President Donald Trump remade the Court with three appointees, has been concentrating authority over federal policymaking within the Court itself. This project necessarily shifts power away from the other two branches, whose leaders are elected, and to the unelected members of the federal judiciary. https://lnkd.in/eeZu_9i7

THE FIGHT FOR BODILY AUTONOMY !! IT’S A FIGHT FOR OUR FREEDOM, CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, OUR BODIES, OUR FAMILIES, AND OUR FUTURES!! REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS! ABORTION IS AN ETHICAL, MORAL, & SPIRITUAL ISSUE THAT IS ALSO A HEALTHCARE ISSUE! REPUBLICANS PREDICT A DYSTOPIAN FUTURE UNDER PRESIDENT BIDEN BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO VIABLE POLICY CONCERNING ABORTION AND AN AGENDA THAT SUPPORTS A CONTINUING PURVEYANCE OF MENDACITY, DYSTOPIA, MISOGYNY, EXTREMISM, FEAR, FRAUD, FASCISM, VIOLENCE, HATRED, BIGOTRY, AND XENOPHOBIA. THEY REPRESENT A METASTASIZING NEOFASCIST AUTOCRATIC THREAT TO DEMOCRACY!! IN ESSENCE ‘A CULT’!! TRUMP IS A VIRUS AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS HIS HOST! THE SCOTUS’S RIGHT WING FEDERALIST AGENDA OF STATES RIGHTS HAS MADE A MOCKERY OF THE ABORTION ISSUE, FURTHERING AN UNTENABLE ANTI-AUTONOMY STANCE, IN DIRECT OPPOSITION TO ETHICAL PRINCIPLES; PUTTING WHAT SHOULD BE A WOMAN’S HEALTHCARE DECISION INTO THE HANDS OF POLITICIANS. IT WILL NOT STAND!!!

IANGEL is proud to endorse the critical resolution introduced by Rep. Nikema Williams, affirming that access to abortion is a fundamental human right. The resolution highlights several key points: ?? Human Rights Violations: Recent state restrictions on abortion violate international human rights treaties ratified by the U.S. ?? International Obligations: The UN Human Rights Committee has called on the U.S. to ensure access to comprehensive reproductive health services, including safe and legal abortions. ?? Legal and Safe Access: The resolution calls for repealing laws that criminalize abortion, ensuring individuals can access healthcare without legal repercussions. ?? Reproductive Rights: It reaffirms that reproductive rights are integral to human rights and urges states to protect these rights by repealing restrictive laws. ?? State Responsibilities: States must align their laws with international human rights obligations and ensure the availability of safe and legal reproductive health services. Join us in supporting this resolution and advocating for reproductive rights. Let’s work together to ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they deserve. Isaiah 5:20 'Woe?to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.' How does this happen? Very subtlety. Words/actions get new 'politically correct' labels because we don't want to offend people. Abortion became reproductive care, then reproductive rights. Rape becomes 'non-consensual' sex. What happens if you use different rulers to measure and cut things? When we use different standards we get different results. Our standard makes us feel good; God's standard makes us feel like sinners. Calling sin what it is forces us to deal with it the way we should, not the way we want to - which is to please ourselves. https://lnkd.in/gAQjEu56
