This Veterans Day, the UNTHSC Regional Simulation Center thanks all who have served, especially our own Stephanie Etter. Stephanie joined the Army in 2011 as a medic, later reclassing as a respiratory therapist. She served at Fort Campbell, KY; Fort Sam Houston, TX; and Landstuhl, Germany, before transitioning to civilian life in 2018. Today, she brings her dedication and expertise to our team, helping us train the next generation of healthcare professionals. ???? Thank you, Stephanie, and all #veterans, for your #service and #sacrifice. ??? #VeteransDay #HSCSimulationCenter #Gratitude #ThankYouVeterans

Too many veterans I hold deep in my heart are not among us this Veterans Day. Their absence, mostly marked by premature deaths, haunts me. This experience is not unique to me and that torments me even more. It's oversimplified and wishful thinking, yet I can't help but think today would look and feel completely different if my loved ones were more closely connected to organizations that served them. I present you the first and only (to the best of my knowledge) consolidated list of traumatic brain injury (TBI) specialty clinical care programs specifically for veterans. Visit https://lnkd.in/eMCvxwN9 for links to each of these organizations' websites. Although it does not appear to directly provide veterans with TBI clinical care, Operation TBI Freedom (Steven J. Smith, CBIS, US Army Veteran), is another organization I should mention. Too many veterans with #TBI are unaware that these programs exist.?Like & share to remind our veterans that their options for wholeness and healing are not limited. #veteran #VeteransDay

Among the 18 million veterans in the U.S., less than half are enrolled in VA healthcare, with only 6 million actively using these services. Jenn Kerfoot, a former Navy corpsman and current Chief Strategy & Growth Officer at DUOS, unpacks in a recent article featured on STAT the bureaucratic maze veterans face post-service, from shocking statistics to sobering realities. The suicide rate for veterans stands alarmingly at 72% higher than that of non-veteran adults, reflecting a deep and pressing need for better access to mental health and medical care. In the article, Jenn advocates for systemic changes to bridge this gap, including automatic VA enrollment for all honorably discharged veterans, streamlined communications between health agencies, and a simplification of the processes that currently hinder veterans from receiving the care they deserve. ?? Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/g7cm94Kv As part of our ongoing support for our veterans, DUOS is proud to partner with Humana in a newly launched initiative aimed at enhancing healthcare experiences through technology, improving access and outcomes. This meaningful partnership reaffirms our commitment and dedication to improving the well-being of our veteran communities. ???? #VeteranHealth #VeteranCare #HonorOurVeterans #Veterans #Healthcare #SuicidePrevention

**The importance of Caring for Our Veterans and Their Families** As we reflect on the commitment and sacrifices made by our veterans and their families, it becomes increasingly clear that our treatment of these individuals has a profound impact on the recruiting and retention efforts within the Department of Defense and all government agencies. Historically, it has been shown that the way we honor and support our multi-generational veterans—those who have been exposed to toxins, dioxins, radiation, and the harsh realities of warfare—directly influences the willingness of future generations to serve. To truly honor our veterans, we need a shift in mindset. It's not just about supporting them during their service; it’s about adopting a “cradle to grave” mentality regarding their care. This means setting aside a dedicated budget within the Department of Defense to address the specific needs and challenges faced by veterans from various conflicts. From the moment they enlist until the end of their days, we must ensure they receive the care and respect they deserve. Currently, less than 10% of Americans serve in the military, and even fewer are actively engaged today. If we don’t change our approach to veteran care, we may find ourselves reconsidering compulsory service just to fill the ranks. Instead, let’s make military service an honorable and sought-after profession. By improving how we care for our veterans and their families after they leave service, we can set a powerful example for future generations. The quality of our defense relies on a steady flow of qualified service members. By fostering an environment where individuals aspire to serve based on the positive experiences of their family members, we can create a competitive atmosphere that elevates standards rather than lowers them. Let us commit to treating our veterans with the dignity and respect they deserve, not only for their service but also as a foundation for a stronger military and a more secure America. Together, we can lead the way forward and ensure that the sacrifices of our veterans are honored for generations to come. #Veterans #MilitaryService #VeteranCare #DepartmentofDefense #Leadership #Commitment #HonoringService

Gen. John E. Hyten, USAF (Ret.), the former vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and his wife, Laura Hyten, recently toured the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The Hytens met with Lt. Col. Elizabeth Schnaubelt, MD, director of C-STARS (Center for Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills)-Omaha, and joined #NSRIFellows Dr. Chris Kratochvil and Dr. James Lawler for a tour of the Training, Simulation and Quarantine Center in the . They later toured the building housing the Negatively Pressurized CONEX, a piece of equipment developed to be placed within a military plane for infectious disease aeromedical transport. UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., met with the Hytens to tour the Fred & Pamela Buffett Center Center, and the day at UNMC ended with a tour of the educational simulation spaces showcased by the Davis Global Center’s iEXCEL program. Gen. Hyten had been involved with UNMC from 2016 in his various roles, but the visit was his first time seeing the completed Davis Global Center and Global Center for Health Security. “Nebraska’s doing things the whole country should be doing,” he said. “We continue to try to learn from that, and I continue to advocate for moving our capabilities forward as a country. We just try to keep learning and carrying the message forward.” The military has moved from analog to digital simulations through the years, as well. “When I joined the service, the simulators back were analog and hardware-in-the-loop” he said. “They were run by hydraulics, and you’d run an aircraft crew through various scenarios with people and machines literally moving (the simulator) manually.? “Today, with a fifth-generation fighter, there isn’t a way to experience failures on a day-to-day basis. The only way to experience that is through a digital simulator. And that is what we built. And in the medical community, it makes perfect sense to practice disasters on a digital simulator, not on a patient. Nebraska’s doing that, which is awesome.” #Nebraska #Omaha #preparedness #response #healthcare #healthcaretraining #defense #nationalsecurity #homelandsecurity #defense
