With fast-moving technological advancement, there will be no other way but to harness the untapped potential from diverse talent pools. Imagine point—cybersecurity driving strengths of a workforce as variegated and dynamic as the challenges before them. That is, indeed, ideal, and in fact, it would be necessary. Reflecting on my own journey, there are points at which mentorship and inclusion feel aspirational rather than real. But the landscape is changing. That is to say, institutions and corporates are interested in breaking the glass ceiling and fostering environments where underrepresented talent, mostly women, is not only a welcomed but also a key voice at the table. So why is that shift important? That is because diversity in cybersecurity is not a gap to be filled; instead, it is an opportunity that diversification of our perspectives enriches our strategies, solutions, and defense against an ever-growing threat. Perspective divergence leads to new ways of doing things and enhances, makes stronger, and improves the ability of cybersecurity frameworks. So, to any woman who is considering a career in cybersecurity, know that your insight, creativity, and resilience are exactly what the field needs. It's not going to be easy, but it has the potential to make a really big difference—not only for all of us in shaping a better and secure world but for those upcoming as well. Be that change, be those mentors, supporters, and advocates for an inclusive environment. This was such an exciting panel to participate in. Such an amazing and insightful group of women’s. Interestingly, quite a few of us shared that we wound up in information technology and security “by happenstance” and that is part of the reason we need more ways to spotlight these types of careers to young females. Females make up less than 30% of employees in this field and only 8% of leadership in these fields are females. I spent much of my career being the only, or one of very few women on the technology/infrastructure side of IT. Where there were a higher volume of women, it tended to be on the service management, project management and application support side. In the most technical spaces, I can recall just a few females in the last 25 years who I worked with in that space. Why do YOU think that is?
