While Devin's AI capabilities are legit, let's not overlook the invaluable contributions of human Software Engineers. They bring a depth of understanding and creativity that's irreplaceable. We're witnessing a surge in hiring at the Senior level, suggesting a growing need for SWEs who can effectively bridge the gap between technology and business outcomes. Devin and it's pals, in my opinion will make this trend continue with the growing ability to outsource lower level skills to AI. Junior and aspiring Engineers should consider this moving forward. ?? Watch out for Devin!

We’re all being deluged with news about how the latest generation of AI is transforming people’s lives, helping businesses be more productive, and even leading to layoffs. But that flood of information doesn’t help anyone answer the most basic question about these AIs: Which is best? So I canvassed executives, engineers and researchers who are knee-deep in the process of applying the world’s most powerful AIs to real world problems, to find out what they have learned. Their answers surprised me. There was plenty of practical advice about the relative strengths and weaknesses of AIs from Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta. But the overall message was that the best AI for any task depends on both the user and the task. Their insights also offer a glimpse of where the entire field of AI is going. In a way that wasn’t true even six months ago, companies can now either embrace the potential cost savings and productivity boost of generative AI—which some researchers believe is on the path to a “general” or humanlike AI—or risk losing out to competitors who will.

In the near term, AI will free engineers from doing chores. Need a new API endpoint that basically does what all the others do except for one little thing? Sweet. AI will help. Need someone to write unit tests? Why? Let AI. The generalist chore engineer gets to disappear, but there will be tremendous value still for the strategically-thinking engineer who uses AI-infused IDEs and whatever to _solve complex business problems_. For awhile. I _do_ think AI is coming for those jobs too. But not in 2024 or 2025.

It's time for more #GenAI answers and less #GenAI hype. I’ve seen trends repeat themselves over my 25-year tenure in #legaltech. Over the last 18 months, I’ve seen customers and investors write big checks to "get in early” on AI, only to find themselves searching for problems to solve or reinventing wheels that have been turning for decades.
