Aniket Doegar started his teaching career in a Pune classroom with a clear goal: "I was doing all of this to build my resume so that I could go to Harvard or Oxford and study," he explains. However, a conversation shifted his perspective: "I remember talking to one of my students' parents and I asked if they knew about government pension programs. And they said, no, we don't even have basic documents." This encounter ignited a question that would redefine his career: How many others were missing out on essential services due to simple unawareness? Determined to find a solution, Aniket founded Haqdarshak. The platform uses technology to bridge the information gap, connecting India's underserved populations with government welfare benefits. They have developed a comprehensive database of over 7,000 welfare schemes and deployed a network of local women, their haqdarshaks, to help people navigate these complex entitlements. To date, Haqdarshak has impacted over 6 million lives, successfully facilitating 3.5 million benefit applications. Aniket was recently selected as a Fellow for the Unreasonable GOALS program 'https://lnkd.in/eNetku6A', a collaboration between Unreasonable and the U.S. Department of State. I was having a discussion with one of my friends on upcoming elections and during the chat I was shocked to know two remarkable schemes initiated by the Andhra Pradesh Incumbent Government, under the dynamic leadership of Mr. Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy Govt. 1. The Village Volunteer system caught my attention— a unique initiative where a dedicated representative is assigned for every 50 households. This ensures that all government schemes, especially those intended for the welfare of the community, effectively reach those who need them the most. 2. Another noteworthy program is 'Nadu-Nedu,' a transformative step aimed at upgrading AP government schools to provide facilities and resources on par with the best private institutions. From upgrading infrastructure to introducing innovative learning tools like digital boards and integrated tablets, this initiative is reshaping the education in the Andhra Pradesh state. As professionals, I am inspired by the government's dedication to upgrade the education sector, making all the way for a brighter future for generations to come. As a responsible citizen, I still feel that everyone deserves the right to education and any Govt working in this direction deserves my appreciation. The Power of Anganwadi Workers! For the past month, I've been reflecting on the social and economic impact this initiative will bring to society. I'm sharing my thoughts here to gather opinions from my LinkedIn connections. Recently, I started reading "A Matter of the Heart: Education in India" by Anurag Behar. This book tells the story of the social changes brought by an Anganwadi teacher and a primary school teacher, despite facing numerous hurdles. To provide some context, I've added a few additional points. North Karnataka, also known as Kalyana Karnataka, is one of the underdeveloped regions of Karnataka. The Hyderabad-Karnataka region falls below even this parameter. Despite decades of constitutional amendments under Article 371 J, we haven't seen significant changes in the empowerment of youth in this region. Eight years ago, at one of the government primary schools, Asha Hegde, who remained the sole teacher for the first three years, started her journey. Simultaneously, an Anganwadi center was established, and Shobha, a local villager, was recruited as the Anganwadi worker. They shared a makeshift temporary structure and became partners in all their struggles, both small and big. The village panchayat was supposed to allocate land for the school, which it kept delaying. Eventually, the panchayat relented and provided land, but it was directly in a water channel, which would flood during the monsoon. They took what they got and worked hard to tackle the torrential water flow during the monsoon. Although no one would admit it, the disinterest by the panchayat seemed to be driven by deep-rooted socio-political processes. Caste played a dominant role in local politics, and the school was largely attended by children from the tribal #community (Thanda school). After the #school building was constructed, student numbers grew, and gradually, a headmaster and more teachers joined. While working at the Anganwadi center, and with the encouragement of Asha Hegde, Shobha continued her studies. After completing the 8th grade, she enrolled in the 10th, then the 12th, and eventually pursued a degree. She was able to achieve this because of Asha Hegde's support. How would our society be if we nudged our colleagues, housekeepers, and parents to pursue further #education? Is it not happening because educating them might not generate immediate income, or is there something else I've overlooked? We have examples of parents and children completing their degrees or cracking exams like NEET/IIT together. The latest figures for those young people not in education, employment, or training (NEET), are out now. They show an increase in 16-24-year-olds NEET - up from 831,000 in 2022 to 851,000. BRIDGING THE COLLEGE EDUCATION TO EMPLOYABILITY GAP The Department of Economic Affairs in its Jan 2024 review has brought out a lot of interesting statistics: -???????The push for mass skilling that the Government starting in 2014 has begun to pay rich dividents. -???????The employable percentage of final year and pre-final year students increased from 33.9% in 2024 to 51.3% in 2024. -???????The enrolment into higher education has increased from 3.2 Crore in 2013-14 to 4.1 Crore in 2020-21 -???????India has 50.2% of men and 41% of women with ten or more years of schooling in the 15-49 age group This implies that India’s young workforce is both expanding and increasing employable. Unlocking EdTech's Next Frontier: The Growing Opportunity in Rural India With the rapid rise in private tuition enrollments among rural students, India’s rural population presents a significant untapped opportunity for edtech companies. A staggering percentage of students, aged 6-14, from rural India are now seeking private tuitions, with states like Bihar seeing a sharp increase in participation rates. In Bihar alone, the number of students enrolled in private tuitions has risen to 65-70%, up from 45% in 2014. This growing trend isn’t confined to Bihar, but also seen in states like Uttar Pradesh, highlighting the massive potential of Tier 2 and Tier 3 regions for edtech expansion. The obvious question arises - Why are rural students opting for private tuitions? The rise in private tuition enrollments in rural areas can be attributed to several key factors: Low Quality of Education in Government Schools: Many parents feel that the education provided by government institutions is inadequate to meet the growing academic expectations, pushing them to seek additional learning support through private tuitions. Fear of Falling Behind: There is a social pressure among rural parents that if their children don’t attend private tuitions, they might lag behind their peers. As more neighbors send their children to tuitions, this fear drives the decision-making process. Demand-Supply Imbalance: With the growth of the rural middle class, the number of students seeking quality education has increased, while the availability of quality seats in schools or government institutions has not kept pace, fueling demand for private tuitions. The Opportunity for EdTech While edtech platforms have traditionally focused on urban centers and high-income households, this rise in private tuition participation in rural areas—especially in Tier 2 and Tier 3 regions—presents an additional opportunity. It may not yet be the primary market for many, but there is immense potential in penetrating this segment. Edtech companies must address the following critical question: "How can we provide accessible, affordable, and high-quality digital learning solutions to rural students, given the unique challenges they face?" As rural India continues to evolve, edtech platforms have a chance to become catalysts for change. By tapping into the growing demand for private tuitions in areas like Bihar and UP, they can empower students who otherwise may not have access to quality education.
