Hey LinkedIn ?? I don't post enough here, but figured this is a perfect opportunity! To the Type A observer, my career probably looks like an unfocused pursuit of shiny desires without a sustained dedication to a singular industry. To that Type A observer: Kudos—you ain't wrong. But there's a thread-through if you dig deeper. My professional career has been defined by pivotal moments in my personal, professional, and political life. Sometimes it's not clear whether to stay the path; other times, continuing is the only path. Sometimes all empirical evidence is shouting "Zig, dammit!" And sometimes the universe cackles and sprinkles a ten ton Zag. Sometimes you spend a 9 month season in black, busted open Air Force 1's, bussing tables and waking up every morning on a deflated air mattress on hardwood floors in a Harlem apartment, crafting a songwriting syllabus with *zero* concrete plans of where or how to implement it, and definitely zero knowledge that months later you'd be selected to be a teaching artist fellow at Columbia University as a result of that same syllabus. Sometimes you get selected to be a teaching artist fellow on the exact same day that you find out you're going to be a travel host for Rolling Stone magazine. To the Type A observer, I clearly need to "pick a lane." Stay ten toes down. Keep my eye on the prize. But the Type B observer probably understands the prize: I'm a maker, a sharer, and a collaborator. The "prize" has always been a robust expression of my ideas, packaged professionally at the highest level available to me. Songwriting as a craft allows me to say what is true, to present it with a goal of greatness, and to share it with the world alongside generous collaborators. Sooooo... 3 years in and still standing ?? ?? Running a small business has been as tricky as predicted (in many cases, just as hard as people warned). ? BUT, Ncounter is going strong - even if there have been several economic setbacks along the way: are we in another recession? still in a cost of living crisis? feeling the effects of the pandemic and Brexit (maybe a bit of a stretch)? ? There have been so many successes so far. I won’t list them all… because they are really boring and might not represent success to you lot ??... however, the three key things that I think most could appreciate: ? - I’ve hired some superstars, people I trust and value highly Tommy Tipping Julian Dela Cruz.... they have the world at their feet, and we’ve become great friends. - A lot of learnings! These have been applied quickly, in a new venture with the brilliant Frankie Fields… when setting up a 2nd business in Poland. ? - What’s important has been redefined and I have a better understanding of what I want from my business and more importantly, my life! ? ?? a few brilliant outcomes if you ask me…. enough to say, starting up on my own was 100% the right decision. ??
