Dr. Melissa E. Heche dropping essential knowledge once again! Custom In-Ear Monitors (CIEMs) aren’t a quick fix for sound-induced hearing loss; they’re a foundational tool in a much larger process. Investing in the *right* CIEM gives you some control over harmful sound exposure, but to fully protect your hearing, additional equipment, education, and discipline are key. These impressive little devices are just one part of a comprehensive approach to hearing health!
October is Protect Your Hearing Month. As a musician, I've been asked quite a few times if in-ear monitors can also act as hearing protection... "In-ear monitors by themselves are not hearing protection devices." I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Melissa E. Heche to discuss in-ear-monitors. Why are they important? Why not just use the wedge monitors vs. IEMs? Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/gHKjQCKn You can watch the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/gMggEFGd Have a joyous day, everyone! -DLB

New preprint online ?? Loudness perception, especially for broadband binaural stimuli, can vary substantially between hearing-impaired listeners with similar audiograms. We characterized this trait in a large cohort of 180 hearing-impaired listeners, the bulk of which was measured at hearing professional's facilities. Very interesting data that further points towards a high potential relevance of individual loudness sensitivity for hearing aid fitting. Manuscript available at https://lnkd.in/dQkNsmQs Thanks to Dirk Oetting, Matthias Latzel, Harald Bonsel and Hendrik Husstedt for the nice collaboration, Gerald Fischbach, Sven Winkler, Matthias Leppert, Cora Viesehon and Thomas Hebbel for their commitment in data collection, and sonova for funding this work.

This is a very interesting paper, reporting on the significant percentage of participants with hearing loss that showed greater than expected loudness sensitivity to binaural broadband sounds. Given the study used equipment and processes that are in place in most #audiology clinics, these findings have clinical implications and show promise for a different approach to optimal hearing aid gain calculations.

What are the most important questions that need to be answered about childhood deafness? We’ve teamed up with Aston University, Lancaster University and The University of Manchester to find out. How are we doing this? We're asking deaf young people aged 16 to 25, parents of deaf children, and professionals working with deaf children to share their insights in a short, five-minute survey. This is your chance to help shape future research questions into deafness. Lucy, who is moderately deaf and part of the project team's steering group, shares why it's vital to take part in the survey. Tell us what you want future research on deafness to focus on by taking the survey today: https://lnkd.in/e_ty9Zdf

Please share this survey link if you are working with deaf children, or have connections with their families or deaf young people, so their priorities can shape the agenda for the field!
