It’s not every day that we get to celebrate a career as influential as #UMassAmherst Professor Emeritus Andrew Barto, who was awarded the 2024 ACM A.M. Turing Award for developing the conceptual and algorithmic foundations of a branch of artificial intelligence known as reinforcement learning (RL). Hear Barto share what this milestone means to him, insights on his career journey, and the impact of his research. After learning that Barton was bestowed the Turing, Rob Manning, UMass Foundation Chair Robert Manning, for whom, along with his wife Donna, the College of Information and Computer Science is named, said "As a pioneer of reinforcement learning, Professor Barto is the cornerstone of UMass Amherst’s legacy and an inspiration for ensuring that AI works for the common good. Congratulations on that, Prof. Barto should be proud. I would like to ask to whoever posted this however is seeing that AI doesn't know good from bad, and will just be using a computational algorithm to "make decisions" will the results of using AI for common good always amount to the same computational outcome?
What an inedible career! I have so many UMass grads who come to get assistance with their resumes from us and succeed in getting that job they have been waiting for!
Take a look at my cv and suggest a short version?
Congratulations
You should contact me. UMass alumni.
Just incredible. What a prestigious recognition.
I had the great pleasure of taking Andy Barto and Rich Sutton's reinforcement learning course the first time it was offered. That's what got me started in multiagent reinforcement learning in 1993. Thank you!
Congratulations. So impressive. And so exciting for you. A job so well done. Bob Mahoney
Cheers to Andy! ??
