For #BlackHistoryMonth Abigail Ngwang discusses the obstacles she's had to overcome on her academic journey and how her LSHTM scholarship fuelled her passion for #HealthEquity. Abi, who is studying MSc Public Health, received a LSHTM Next Generation scholarship after attending Medical School at the?University of Leeds. Reflecting on the barriers she has faced, Abi said: "Medicine is still in many ways an inherited degree; it helps to have someone who knows the system. I am extremely proud to be the daughter of two immigrants, but it has meant that there can be a lack of guidance as you aren’t privy to the “rules of the game". “The inherited nature of medicine also means that at time there is very little diversity, and that as a black-heritage student you can feel othered at times, and unfortunately feel the need to hide your uniqueness, instead of celebrating it. Therefore, representation is extremely important, it allows you to visualise your dream, and allows you to be authentically you." Speaking about her next generation scholarship and experiences at LSHTM, she said: “The LSHTM Next Generation Scholarship has had an immense impact on me. It is so much more than financial support. It has validated my experiences and my background. I know that the School values people from my background, and that our voices not only listened to, but appreciated and celebrated. “I knew that LSHTM was diverse, and that studying here would be so valuable due to the variety of backgrounds, but it has surpassed my expectations. I attended lectures from world-leading experts and have made friends from all over the world!” After her studies Abi plans to work within health and contribute to the eradication of health disparities. She also offered some words of advice for others who are considering applying for a scholarship and further study options: “Applying for this master's and the scholarship felt like a giant leap of faith, but now that I'm here, I'm so extremely glad that I took the leap. So, if you are considering applying for the MSc Public Health or the scholarship programme, my top piece of advice would be GO FOR IT! There is absolutely no harm in trying. You might surprise yourself.” Read more about Abi's journey??? https://lnkd.in/gQBtCHdR #PublicHealth #GlobalHealth #ReclaimingNarratives #Scholarships

Jamie Merisotis, President of Lumina Foundation, challenged us to embrace this critical moment for higher education. With growing skepticism about the value of a degree, Merisotis urged leaders to focus on connecting learning to the issues facing our communities and preparing students for active, informed citizenship. Higher education is at a crossroads. How we define its role today will shape its impact tomorrow. #AllInCCA2024

What’s the relationship between MDRC and academia? Overlapping interests—and a kindred spirit of evidence-based inquiry—have long nourished close ties. Since our founding, these connections have also shaped hiring, with MDRC staff often coming from master’s and doctoral programs or even professorships and MDRC research assistantships likewise serving as a valued training ground for future academics. Likewise, we have a long history of shaping each other’s work. MDRC helped transform the approach to studying social policy, making random assignment studies the “coin of the realm” in several disciplines, as our former president Gordon Berlin put it. Meanwhile, academic institutions have long worked with MDRC to lend their unique expertise to methodological innovations and to particular research projects—from partnerships with the University of Michigan to study the impact of coaching on early childhood educators to work with the Community College Research Center at Teachers College, Columbia University, to craft new interventions for helping community college students. Yet MDRC’s 50-year story also reveals important differences with academia. From the beginning, MDRC did not stop at carrying out a research study. We brought capabilities in program operations and technical assistance that enabled larger-scale projects and more hands-on work with government and nonprofit partners. And while many academics want to see their work applied, academia’s reward structure is often weighted against interdisciplinary work that helps build actionable evidence. Above all, MDRC has been a hub for researchers who care about real-world impact. Sometimes that’s meant welcoming new staff who want to build a career outside of academia. Other times, it’s meant partnering with scholars who are based at academic institutions. The point is to use what we learn to transform people’s lives, whether or not we call a campus home. #mdrc #mdrc50 #academia #research #altac #leavingacademia #highereducation

Dollars have always trumped #diversity when it comes to international #studentrecruitment. #universities want to #diversify but when it comes to budget allocation the majority is funnelled year on year into #china & #india regardless! The bigger question for universities wherever their students are coming from is how they are supporting students transition to the workforce, either in their country of #study for #poststudywork & even more importantly those that return home to embark on their #earlycareers. For the latest International #Employability Insight subscribe to: https://lnkd.in/e5c_CSE4 “The #Australian government’s international education crackdown will make it harder for #universities to attract students from a greater variety of countries, a forum has heard. Leonie Patrick director of international student recruitment at Western Sydney University, said #Canberra’s proposal to?cap foreign enrolments?would deprive the sector of the cash it needed to cultivate new overseas sources. Luke Sheehy, CEO of Universities Australia, said the proposed caps were an intervention by #education ministers to “fix” a policy change from a former home minister:?ministerial direction 107, which had slowed down #visa processing and “taken a blowtorch to market #diversification”. Mr Sheehy said the sector had “missed the opportunity” to talk about #internationaleducation “properly” more than a decade ago, after an earlier round of policy changes had been bedded down. “We should have been having a conversation about…what does the sector look like, what’s the long-term viability? This is where you can have interesting conversations about institutional & perhaps regional distributions. You can’t do it in the middle of a crisis.” Asia Careers Group SDN BHD - Investing in International Futures AIEA - Association of International Education Administrators AUIDF Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN Universities) British Council BUILA Education New Zealand | Manapou ki te Ao International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) Innovative Research Universities (IRU) Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia Independent Tertiary Education NZ (ITENZ) National Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (NAGCAS) Regional Universities Network The Group of Eight UCAS UKCISA Universities Canada Universities UK Universities UK International

Lumina Foundation released its annual Stronger Nation educational attainment report yesterday, and while significant progress has been made in increasing the number of Americans with a postsecondary degree or credential, as a nation, we are not on track to meet our attainment goals. Policies, practices, and perspectives that increase completion rates are critical to reaching the nation's attainment goal. Getting students to college is important, but it is just as vital to get them through college to earn the credentials that open new doors, bring economic opportunity, and bolster equity. We have work to do on college completion, and CCA is here to do that work with you. #CCADoesTheWork
