It used to be that traditional publishers would promote authors using their marketing departments and internal PR staff. Now, authors are having to hire outside agencies to help them promote their book. Traditional publishers no longer have the resources. Even some well-known authors are hiring outside agencies to help them promote their book. If you are an author and you want to give your book the best chance to succeed, you'll need to invest in marketing and PR services either with your hybrid publisher who provides these services or with outside organizations that specialize in it. Here is an article that talks about it. https://lnkd.in/gpg9TCvD

You know you’re in PR when… Your boss or client sends you back edits in a press release or blog post like this: - Uppercasing job titles after names, e.g., "John Smith, Director of Sales & Marketing." - Adding a comma before "and," e.g., "apples, oranges, and bananas." Neither of these follows AP style, the guidelines from The Associated Press Stylebook. According to AP, it should be "John Smith, director of sales & marketing" and “apples, oranges and bananas.” Using AP style in PR is important because it is the standard used by most journalists. You’re essentially writing for the news, and adhering to these guidelines makes it easier for journalists to pick up your stories without additional edits. This not only shows respect for their time but also increases the likelihood of your message being conveyed accurately and efficiently. Neglecting AP style can irritate reporters and hurt your media relations. In college, I had to memorize the entire AP Stylebook in order to pass the class. And for that, I’m thankful! P.S. What kind of errors in writing do you see all the time? Share in the comments below. #PublicRelations #APStyle #PRLife

Talented writer, editor, and columnist Karin Klein writes a scathing piece in The Hollywood Reporter concerning the ill-conceived, poorly handled decision by the owner of the LA Times to have the Times offer NO endorsement in the '24 Presidential election. Read her observations and reasoning with care and learn from a seasoned professional about ethics, timing, judgment in a deeply important election season. Then (calling all writers), observe Klein's deft use of stealth metaphors in the piece. You'll find therein these stealth metaphors: “carry out,” “remotely,” “weigh in on,” “his call,” “11th hour,” “throw the race,” “throws shade,” “stakes too big,” “monkeying,” “formed and hardened,” “take a stand,” “railing,” “comparing apples and oranges,” “throw under the bus,” and “blocked.” Stealth metaphors provide speed, insight, focus, and brevity as a talented writer moves us through complex considerations concerning press and media practices. Do you know when to use (and not use) stealth metaphors? Hope so. Let me know. #metaphorsandbeyond
When I was abruptly laid off from the Los Angeles Times in June 2023 by a form email – no call, no meeting, no personal touch, just a mass email sent to some 74 employees – I spent time wondering whether the newspaper’s management was so dysfunctional that it no longer knew how to carry out a simple staff reduction, or whether it simply didn’t care about basic courtesy toward its people, including one like me who had been writing and/or editing for the paper since 1989.

If you choose to forgo hiring an editor who pays attention to detail and ensures high-quality work, focusing on grammar, syntax, and readability, you risk producing a book that is difficult for readers to enjoy—unless, of course, you are a professional editor with years of experience yourself. It’s unwise to create something so meaningful and then neglect to invest in its quality. Ensuring your book is well-edited and reader-friendly is essential for delivering a seamless experience to your audience. Getting published is an accomplishment, but it loses its value if your book hasn’t been taken seriously.

I wasn't aware of the history of this term, but I enjoyed this article about the power of using narratives in speech writing and building stories. I've used this technique before but learning the history is fun (at least for me). There are several issues to be aware of when trying this, which are well captured in the article. #communications #speechwriting #storytelling https://lnkd.in/gPH6qBh6
