Ever wonder what lives in our waters? Join us on Saturday, Sept. 14th for an exciting morning of hands-on exploration and meet fascinating pond creatures at Aquatic Ecology Family Fishing Day! Visit an interactive education booth displaying a collection of live aquatic invertebrates and plants. Use nets and fishing poles to explore the ponds and catch your own fish and invertebrates. Biologists and volunteers will be on hand to offer fishing tips, identify your catch, and discuss their unique characteristics and ecology. The first 30 families to register at the event receive a special gift! Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eu7NsiGz

According to a?new study in Nature Ecology and Evolution?by researchers of Curtin University, Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, CORDIO East Africa and others, shark conservation benefits are doubled when Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are established in nations that also limit shark fishing through catch limits or gear restrictions. ?????? Based on the world’s largest reef shark and ray survey, Global FinPrint, a project funded by The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, these findings emphasize that nations should use both MPAs and effective fisheries management to rebuild reef shark populations. ?????? In September 2023, the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC or Council) recommended that three areas (A?o Nuevo, Ascension Canyon, and Sur Ridge), described in a NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries scoping document, move forward for consideration for potential closures of certain fishing activities and gear to promote coral restoration and research. PFMC and NOAA Fisheries are developing the analysis for the action, which will be further discussed at the Council meeting in March 2024 meeting. The purpose of this webinar is to share information on the three proposed areas, discuss deep-sea coral outplanting techniques, highlight the Geographic Information System (GIS) decision support tool and provide the public an opportunity to ask questions and share information about these areas, including any known hazards, unique biogenic habitats, nursery/spawning grounds or other information which can help inform the analysis of this action. Excessive lighting can not only disrupt our lives and circadian rhythm, it can greatly impact the ecology of native wildlife like migrating birds, bats, insects, reptiles and amphibians, and even plant life. This time of year when many species are waking up to spring, moving great distances to breeding grounds, and starting to raise their young, it is particularly important to be aware of excessive light use. During the months of March to May, and August to November, there are some extra tips you may consider to limit your contribution to light pollution. ?? Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management - Marine Conservation - Climate Change Activist - Analytical and Research Skills
I am passionate about saving marine life! An endangered species of lamprey fish was found in coastal rivers in Queensland, 1400 km away from their original dwellings on the NSW/Victorian border. The species is thought to be extinct in southern NSW, but the search for more populations in Queensland by Dr. Luke Carpenter-Bundhoo and David Moffatt was successful. The Australian brook lamprey (Mordacia praecox) is a filter feeder, unlike its parasitic relative, the short-headed lamprey (Mordacia mordax). The brook lamprey is easily mistaken for its relative and the difficulty in their identification threatens their conservation. ? The study conducted by Dr Luke Carpenter-Bundhoo and David Moffatt is important in conserving what was thought to be an extinct species in NSW. This required analytical skills to appropriately identify the lamprey fish. As a student studying Environmental Science, one of my classes, Ecology and Management of Wildlife, required us to participate in fieldwork by laying traps and identifying animals. As a class we were shown the appropriate trap for catching bats. The trap was successful in capturing a bat, and the next step was to evaluate the species of bat caught.? I approached the tasks by using my analytical skills when conducting research, studying the facial features and body of the bats. This resulted in successfully identifying the bat as the chocolate wattled bat due to its milk-chocolate brown fur and short muzzle and I received a high mark on my quiz. Interesting discussion on native plants in gardens!
Is the modern focus on native plants really as important to our environment as claimed—and if so, how? ???? In this week’s episode of #PlantPeople with PRX, we catch up with Doug Tallamy, Professor of Agriculture & Natural Resources at the University of Delaware. As an expert in their Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology, he knows a thing or two about the benefits of planting natives, and feeding the birds and the bees (and squirrels, butterflies… you get the gist) is high on the list. Listen to find out how healthy ecosystems rely on these plants to thrive, and how the home garden is just the start: https://lnkd.in/eMvV8jzT

It's Invasive Species Awareness Week! Did you know that some invasive species are intentionally brought in while others sneak in accidentally? These plants, animals, and micro-organisms can wreak havoc on local ecosystems. What can YOU do about invasive species? ? Learn to identify them (check out the guides on our website) ? Choose native plants for your yard ? Stay on marked trails and keep your pets on a leash while exploring nature ? Clean your gear – from bikes and boots to boats and pets – to avoid unintentionally transporting these species ? Find out more at https://lnkd.in/eP8BkkTN This week we’ll be diving deep into one of the invasive species that have changed the ecology of Lake Simcoe (and lakes Michigan, Huron, and Ontario). Can you guess what it might be? Tell us in the comments below ?? #InvSpWk #InvasiveSpecies #LakeSimcoeWatershed #ProtectOurEcosystems

We have a new publication out in the journal Population Ecology. Working with collaborators from Virginia Tech's Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation, we created a population viability model for flatwoods salamanders using a 13-year history of monitoring data. This paper highlights the importance of long-term datasets that can be used to better understand population dynamics and inform future management actions for rare species. This paper combines work from Dr. George Brooks' and Science Director, Dr. Houston Chandler's dissertations and can be viewed on our publication page. https://lnkd.in/dEYn_cRQ #OrianneSociety #HoustonChandler #ScienceofScales #science #research #conservation #salamanders Check out our latest paper in Population Ecology!
