Here in the U.S. we've begun "Hispanic Heritage Month." While focusing publicly on a particular group for only one month out of the year has its challenges, it does bring heightened awareness and the promise of **action!** Thank you, American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education for representing so many linguists who help students, school staff and families throughout the school year! Refresh your #CulturalIntelligence Hispanic: Refers to people who speak Spanish or are descended from Spanish-speaking populations. This term is language-based and includes people from Spain, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean, as long as they speak Spanish. It excludes Brazil, where Portuguese is spoken. Latino: Refers to people from Latin America, including countries where Spanish, Portuguese, or French is spoken. This term is geography-based and includes people from Brazil but excludes Spain. "Latina" is the feminine form, and "Latino" is the masculine. Latinx: A more recent, gender-neutral term that refers to people of Latin American descent. It is often used to be more inclusive of individuals who do not identify strictly as male or female, or for those who prefer a gender-neutral option. These terms highlight cultural, linguistic, and regional identities, but each individual may prefer one term over another based on their own background and experiences.

Celebrating the International Day of Sign Languages! ???? Sign languages bridge cultures and connect over 70 million deaf people worldwide, including many immigrants who navigate new societies. With more than 80% of deaf people living in developing countries and using over 300 different sign languages, this day highlights the importance of recognizing and promoting sign languages as equal to spoken languages. Around 65 million people in the U.S. identify as Hispanic or Latino. Different and vibrant cultures exist within that large demographic. Latin America plays a big part in those cultural identities and is predominantly a Spanish-speaking region. But younger generations are asking if language crucial to determining identity. What about those Hispanic Americans who don't speak Spanish? According to the Pew Research Center, 78% of U.S. Hispanics say it's not necessary to speak the language to identify as Latino or to the culture. Meanwhile, 54% of those who speak very little or no Spanish reported that other Latinos have made them feel badly about it.

Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15th - October 15th. The 2024 theme for Hispanic Heritage Month is the Spanish phrase “?Viva la Gente Que Lucha!” which translates roughly to “Long Live the People who Fight”. This year’s theme speaks to the continuous struggle that Latine populations face as they push for equitable treatment in the spaces they occupy. For instance, many Latine individuals experience linguistic bias. Linguistic bias consists of making assumptions about an individual based on the languages or dialects they speak. This includes their accent or vernacular, which, in academic settings, may result in an inaccurate assessment of their intelligence. According to the Pew Research Center, “four-in-ten Latinos say they have experienced discrimination in the past year, such as being criticized for speaking Spanish or being told to go back to their home country” (Hugo Lopez et al., 2018). Some Spanish language speakers also face barriers in healthcare settings. According to research done by California Health Foundation, “nearly one in five Spanish-language calls ended with the scheduler hanging up on the caller or informing them that no one was available to assist them in Spanish” (Martinez, 2023).These barriers can also discourage Spanish-speaking individuals from getting the help they need when seeking mental health care. Despite the fact that US health care organizations receiving federal funding are legally required to deliver care to Spanish-speakers, many lack the resources to provide care to these patients. Compared to English-proficient patients, “individuals with limited English proficiency receive fewer health care services, have greater unmet mental health needs, and get poorer-quality care” (Escobedo et al., 2023). It’s important to acknowledge the barriers that Latine patients face and to amplify their voices when they reach out for the care they need. Did you know that in 1990, a law was passed in the United States to protect Native American languages? This law plays a crucial role in preserving these languages, which are the heart of cultural identity and heritage. Just as music helps us teach new languages to children, these native languages help keep traditions alive and allow different cultures to understand and respect one another. ???? At Armelle For Kids, we believe in the power of language to connect us and to bridge cultural gaps.
