It was so fulfilling to be home this weekend for UHA Toledo's momentous 10th Annual Free Health Fair, where high school students put on an incredible clinic that expanded our services like never before. The students organized free haircuts, voter registration, connections to legal aid, mental health support, menstrual supplies, and harm reduction equipment IN ADDITION to seven specialties of doctors for nearly 100 patients (in just four hours) this Saturday. I continue to be amazed by the tenacity, leadership, and determination of our young minds and it is my honor to support them as they become community leaders. Hard to believe that it has been 10 years since I first volunteered for Universal Health Aid to support in putting on a free health clinic for members of the Toledo community. Since then, I went on to join and lead the national team where we provide legal, financial, and leadership support to the students that run our six nationwide chapters across the Midwest. In my time with this organization, I have enabled the care of over 1000 uninsured and underinsured community members, led 200+ students through and past the COVID-19 pandemic, and provided essential resources that address social determinants to healthcare (menstrual supplies, NARCAN distribution, masks, food, and more) across 6 communities. Alls to say this organization has had an irrevocable impact on my life and deeply shaped my goals, skills, and perspectives; as I hope it will for the next generation of students going out of their way to do the good work. Feeling like a proud parent. Can't wait to see what these young minds do next ??
Love to see this!! UHA had such a huge impact on me and how I think about mutual aid. Great to see this still lives on.
