United Way of the Brazos Valley celebrates Sara Mendez, the Assistant Director of Texas A&M School of Public Health has been a board member with us for six years. Sara has donated her time, efforts, and passion to our mission and community. Her contributions will keep our mission alive for years to come! From the bottom of our hearts, Thank You for your service, Sara! ?? Sara shares her story below: "I became a board member of the United Way of the Brazos Valley in 2019 because I heard an ad on the radio. I already had a passion for UWBV since I had been involved for many years (I think since around 2003) as a committee member, grant reviewer, and grant reviewer team lead. I was familiar with the organization and the great work they do in the community. So, I committed to the next step of being on the board. Throughout my six years as a board member, I helped the organization grow through hiring a new President and CEO and revising the bylaws. I also assisted with the grant review process for our community partners, served as board chair in 2023, served on the community impact committee, and contributed financially through events and workplace campaigns. I am honored to have served on the UWBV board, and I know the organization will continue to mobilize communities to action." #UnitedIsTheWay

“[With the release of the Guide to Wisconsin Hospitals] we learned that 53 of Wisconsin’s non-profit hospitals operated in the red in 2023… That is one out of every three Wisconsin hospitals,” said Eric Borgerding, WHA president and CEO, in a recent column for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He continued “Without meaningful support from lawmakers, Wisconsin hospitals will continue to face significant financial strain that threatens not only the stability of our health care system but the availability of care for our state’s communities.” Read more here ?? https://ow.ly/8Uha50Ujr6y

? Introducing the Collective Care Fund: A Community of Support for Young Leaders ? At the National Collaborative for Transformative Youth Policy (TYP Collaborative), we believe in collaboration with young people—not just as partners in transforming policies but also in embodying the care and community we advocate for. That’s why TYP is launching the Collective Care Fund. This fund is designed to meet the urgent needs of the young leaders at the heart of our work, many of whom have personally experienced the harms of systemic inequities. ?? Why this matters For young leaders, unexpected challenges—like a medical bill, delayed student aid, or a job loss—can derail even the best-laid plans. And as we head into 2025, with threats of public program cuts and increasing challenges for youth, we want to be ready to provide support when needed most. ?? This fund isn’t just about emergencies; it’s also about celebrating life’s joys—a graduation, a new child, or other milestones that deserve recognition.| We aim to raise $10,000 to get this fund off the ground. ?? Why give? This is a chance to embody care and solidarity with the young people leading the way toward a better, more just future. ?? Will you join us? Every $5 matters. Together, we can build a fund that says: We see you. We support you. We celebrate you. #YouthLeadership #CollectiveCare #CommunitySupport #TYP #DonateToday #Youth #Advocacy #GiveTuesday

For the second year, Providence partnered with the TGR Foundation, a Tiger Woods Charity, to host a half-day program to educate under-resourced high school students about career paths in health care. This year, leaders from St. Joseph Hospital, St. Jude Medical Center and Providence South Division, met with over 250 students from Anaheim Union High School to explore career opportunities as they prepare for life after graduation. Our partnership with the TGR Foundation is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in addressing community health needs. The TGR Foundation is committed to equipping young people from under-resourced communities with the tools they need to unlock their potential and prepare for their futures. Together, we are dedicated to building healthier communities and addressing health inequities across Southern California. #SoProvidence #SoStJoes

Health foundations have a significant opportunity to harness the influence and involvement of board members as great allies in advancing the mission. Too often, however, board members begin their tenure with a significant disadvantage in that their roles and responsibilities have been poorly or shallowly defined and explained. Board members generally come to nonprofit organizations with the desire to affect positive change. They wish to leverage their unique skills, insights and influence to move the mission forward. Yet, many board members will confide they were thwarted in their intentions to contribute by not having access to the information needed to be successful. Given the competitive advantage board members can bring to the organization, it is essential to start and to continue supporting a high value relationship with each board member through access to information and tools. I have so many comments on the federal funds freeze, but others explain it so much better: “This reckless action by the administration would be catastrophic for nonprofit organizations and the people and communities they serve,” said?Diane Yentel, President & CEO of the National Council of Nonprofits. “From pausing research on cures for childhood cancer to halting housing and food assistance, shuttering domestic violence and homeless shelters, and closing suicide hotlines, the impact of even a short pause in funding could be devastating and cost lives. This order must be halted immediately before such avoidable harm is done.” “Improving the public’s health by supporting our state, tribal, local and territorial health departments and other national and community-based health organizations is essential and federal agency grants play an extremely critical role in achieving these efforts in every community,”?said Georges C. Benjamin, MD, Executive Director of the American Public Health Association. “By pausing these vital funds, which were approved by Congress, this decision threatens to stall essential public health and prevention programs and research.?Halting these funds stymies progress and is a matter of life and death.”

Nearly 200 partners came together this week for our annual MC2026 Scorecard report event, part of our promise to provide community-level data of our collective efforts to achieve Mighty Change throughout Maricopa County. The data in this year’s report indicated, many of the metrics are progressing too slowly toward our community-level goals, and in some cases, moving in the wrong direction. We heard from Dr. Sybil Francis with Center for Future of Arizona on how Arizonan’s agree these goals are shared aspirations. We also heard from community partners, Betsy Hargrove with AVONDALE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT, Tomás León with Equality Health Foundation, Alison Rapping with Arouet, and Tamara Wright Bridwell with U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) on bright spots of programs making an impact, resulting in successes we can all learn from. No single factor or entity is responsible for our community’s outcomes and we know that it is only by working together that we can solve for some of the Valley’s greatest challenges in education, housing, health and workforce development. We remain committed to strengthening collaboration with all of you—our vital nonprofit partners, corporate community, foundations, policymakers and individual supporters across Maricopa County. Check out the data, stories and impact in the MC2026 Scorecard at www.vsuw.org/MC2026

Through its grant work, the Elevance Health Foundation works to address health inequalities and strengthen our communities, which helps advance Elevance Health's purpose of improving the health of humanity. In July 2021, the Foundation made a commitment of up to $90 million over a three-year period to advance health equity in the following focus areas: maternal, food as medicine, substance use disorder, and community resiliency/disaster relief. I'm excited to share that they have exceeded that milestone, committing more than $97.3 million over the last three years. Through these grants and associate engagement programs, the Foundation has provided funding to over 12,000 nonprofit partners across the country, impacting more than 43 million Americans. - https://ow.ly/bQ6w30sI7Kx

Nothing is more inspiring and magical than the generosity of a donor making a transformative gift to your health care organization. With this generosity comes the great responsibility of properly handling the gift, acknowledging the donor and outlining clear expectations of use and impact. However, many organizations fall short in this responsibility because of a lack of due diligence before accepting the gift. Many organizations do not have up-to-date or even existing policies and guidelines or the proper documents that ensure donor and organizational expectations are achieved. This can lead to unmet donor expectations, disappointment, and worst of all, a lack of trust. There is no better time to get your “docs” in order than right now. It is a necessary process on which you must embark for both your organization and your donors. Like the mundane nature of doing one’s taxes, revisiting policies, guidelines and templates needs to be at the top of your spring cleaning list, to ensure industry best practices in a constantly changing world.
