Today we launched a new self help tool for people facing family violence - a Home of Your Own. It's about understanding your rights, and taking action. We know that family violence is a leading cause of housing insecurity for women and children, who represent three-quarters of people accessing homelessness services. We also know the numbers of people at risk continues to grow and that the impact of violence and homelessness radiates out into the community. This tool was co-designed with women who've lived experience of family violence and homelessness, together with frontline community workers. By answering a few anonymous questions about their situation, renters facing family violence can learn about their rights, and be directly supported to take practical steps in maintaining or accessing safe housing, including by creating personalised documents to communicate with their rental providers.? A common question we have received in the past is, "Where do you find these women who have been trafficked?" Oftentimes, it can be through our police partners, medical partners, referrals, churches, and through contacting us themselves through our website by email or calls. A common misconception is that we "rescue" these women, but that is not what we do. Usually, either someone who has had contact with the victims will refer them to us or these women find us on their own terms. Victims and survivors may have difficulty asking for help and sometimes it can take months or even years for them to be able to trust us. We meet survivors where they are and Covered's mission is to empower every survivor toward healing and self-sufficiency. The Philanthropy Roundtable reports this year's #GivingTuesday results. The good news first. In spite of Giving Tuesday coming later in the season (Dec. 2), Americans donated a record $3.6 billion. The bad? The number of participating households decreased. Community-based charities suffered the most. Museums, however, may have an edge.
