Today was a little different. Instead of my usual lunchtime walk I gave a presentation in Welsh to Merched Y Wawr community group. My presentation was around the work MetDesk does in providing forecasts to those who keep the transportation system moving, with a focus on the local area and specifics around gritting - when and why. Having the snow melt on cue for today was a handy party trick! I'll admit, I was a little outside my comfort zone - I had to change the style of presenting as it was less 'business-like' than perhaps I would normally do. I'd also managed to translate my slides without using Google, which I was pleased about. Although Welsh is my first language, I don't use it daily beyond the home, so terms like 'Climatic Domains' take a little extra thought to translate. Social Value/Community Benefits now form an increasing part of most publicly tendered contracts we come across. It's often a challenge to find activities where you can deliver tangible social value, especially when you're not involved in delivering infrastructure or construction projects. Engaging with community groups in your home area is a quick win. It takes a little effort and time but is very rewarding and you'd be surprised at the level of interest in what you and your organisations do - I can thoroughly recommend!
