Football lessons that can be applied in real-life I went to the bar yesterday to unwind from the day's stress, and there was a match between Real Madrid and Malian. You could see the bond that brings people together and United, the tension when your team loses a clean sweet pass to score a goal, the pain, and then the joy when your team scores. So beautiful to behold. Now for the team that won, their heart will be filled with joy and happiness, celebrating victory over the match. Also to others who lose, how do you manage the pain and disappointment, As I reflected on the experience, I realized that sports mirror life's triumphs and setbacks. Knowing how we respond to loss shapes our resilience and victories. Reflecting on this experience, I gleaned valuable lessons: 1. Joy in victory: Celebrate milestones, no matter the size. 2. The story of Abel Mutai and Iván Fernández is a beautiful example of sportsmanship and integrity. During a cross-country race in Spain in 2012, Kenyan runner Abel Mutai stopped just short of the finish line, thinking he had completed the race. Spanish runner Iván Fernández, who was right behind him, realized what had happened and guided Mutai to the finish line, allowing him to win. This act of kindness and fairness holds several important lessons for our daily lives: 1. Integrity Over Victory Iván Fernández could have easily taken advantage of the situation to win the race himself. Instead, he chose to do the right thing, demonstrating that integrity and honesty are more valuable than winning at any cost. 2. Helping Others Fernández's actions remind us of the importance of helping others, even when it might not benefit us directly. In a world where competition often takes precedence, his gesture shows that supporting one another can lead to more meaningful and fulfilling outcomes. 3. Empathy and Understanding By recognizing Mutai's confusion and stepping in to help, Fernández displayed empathy and understanding. This teaches us to be aware of others' struggles and to offer assistance when we can. 4. Setting an Example Acts of kindness and fairness set a powerful example for others. Fernández's decision to help Mutai has inspired many people around the world, showing that true sportsmanship and humanity transcend the desire to win. 5. It reminds us to live out our values in every aspect of our lives. Love this article Melody Lee and for many women, including me a personal reflection of my career and the notion of golf as currency of business. As one of the first classes to go through the University of Oregon Warsaw Sports Business Club (which was not a club, it was sports business program) MBA program, I connected the dots quickly that golf was a currency in business. Not sports, but business. When the executives from the NBA, NFL, NCAA, NHL, and every team under the sun would come speak to our class, the male students would go play golf with them and the professors. I had worked golf tournaments in undergrad and saw the commraderie and "club like" energy between the men who would gather to drink, spend the day and enjoy the golf. But, having grown up in a small town, and no real exposure to all of this, I didn't know how to swing a club or how to even get started. But what I did know, is that if I wanted to advance according to my ambition, I needed to learn to play golf. When I did my graduate internship, I took golf lessons for a whole summer. Learning how to swing the club, the difference between irons and woods, and how putting could be my friend. In my second year, instead of just being the Graduate Teaching Fellow, I also joined the golf outings - as the only woman. The experience of just being there and knowing what was happening put me into the a different category in the club. Over the years, I have come to love and appreciate golf, but I got there on my own. Empowering people that have traditionally been underrepresented into paths that can create real impact for their futures is the name of the game. Not just saying, but doing. Access to capital, access to people that allocate capital is a huge opportunity for women, youth and all populations of poeple that have struggled for investment. Pair that with the very real statistic in this article, that women account for more that $31.8 TRILLION in global spending and over the next 4 years are expected to control 70-80% of all consumer purchases across the household, products and services, that's a big opportunity. To develop audience, to support them, to reflect them and to demonstrate commitment via investment that isn't just drafting off the equity of a sponsorship, but rather making a demonstrable commitment in other ways that will support changing the systems and enhancing and empowering access is the win. Like most issues the issue of Rachel “Raygun” Gunn’s performance in Break Dancing at the 2024 Paris Olympics is a complex one. There are a few themes that I’m picking up from this discussion overall and I hope to tease them apart into a few simple points: ??♀? There’s a difference between who a person is and what they do. Criticizing an action should be ok, criticizing the person should not be. ?? There’s a difference between winning at “life” and winning in a competition like the Olympics. In life, you should be encouraged to take risks (responsibly) and learn from the mistakes you make along the way. This is what we hope to instill in our kids. ?? With our children, colleagues at work, etc. we should encourage effort but be truthful about the effectiveness of the performance. Feedback should be given, where appropriate, in a sensitive way. Keep in mind that not everyone needs to hear your opinion. ?? In a major competition, being ‘different’ is a high-risk / high-reward game. Take Dick Fosbury as an example… he took gold in the high jump in Mexico City in 1968 using his “Fosbury Flop” technique – jumping over the bar backwards. He took a big risk and changed the high jump forever.
