Ignorance: This month I am posting more about MS because, together with lots of other MS-patients, I am participating in the yearly fundraise. This we do because we hope a cure will be found soon for this awful, unpredictable and so far incurable disease. Unfortunately, this year again, there are people out here who question my diagnosis and sincerity. 'You can't have MS and run the distances you do' , 'Why are you begging for money, you look perfectly healthy, I don't believe you and will never give you one €'. These are hust two remarks I got this week. So far I just block persons like this, but next time I might share your comments and details (although often they use fake names), because you don't have to support me and donate, but don't tell me I am a fake! You can just ignore my posts. Coming out is not easy, sharing is not easy, but this is also showing how we need this to create awareness and more understanding. I choose to be as positive as possible and deal with the MS my way. There are no two MS-patients alike, that's why it's also called tge snowflake disease. Yes, I feel very lucky I have the mild form, I am grateful beyond words for that. This doesn't mean it is never affecting me. I have pains, restless legs, muscle spasms, numbness, tiredness now and then. But I take action and so far I can deal with the symptoms and live a good, healthy and active life. But this needs attention, every day again. Also grateful for the platforms MS International Federation (MSIF) and @MS-Research NL are giving us patients and Ambassadors to paticipate in the fight for awareness and for updating us where the money is spent that we collected and of course Stuart Fox , my co-ambassador in the May50K and partner in crime to create awareness and more understanding for MS. They are chronic conditions of the heart that are maintained and treated throughout a person's entire life. There is no "cure" for congenital heart disease, only medications, treatments, procedures and surgeries. Nearly 1 in 100 babies are born with congenital heart disease. On Friday 13th September 2024, we recognised World Sepsis Day for Lunch & Learn with colleagues at Scimitar Park and those that joined us online. We raised money for The UK Sepsis Trust through selling cakes and, my personal favourite, giving our non-clinical colleagues the opportunity to play with needles – cannulation, venepuncture (taking ‘blood’ samples) and accessing a port on a dummy arm and chest! ￡65.00 in cash was collected and donated to The UK Sepsis Trust via JustGiving. Many of you were generous in adding your own online donations, and I’m sure the total combined will have been over ￡100.00. ? For those that missed it, we played this short informative video from The UK Sepsis Trust (below), and got teams battling against each other on a fastest fingers first quiz of all things ‘sepsis’. ? Many people were surprised just how vast the statistics were when it comes to sepsis. A re-cap of that – one in five deaths are related to sepsis, more than breast, prostate and colorectal cancers combined. This accounts for up to 48,000 deaths in the UK every year, from around 245,000 cases of sepsis. ? With better awareness, we can save lives. Remember to ask yourself, ‘could this be sepsis?’ and seek medical help urgently if there is any suspicion for yourself, a loved one or a patient. ? Signs: S – Slurred Speech or Confusion E – Extreme Shivering, Feeling Very Cold P – Passing No Urine S – Severe Breathlessness I – It Feels Like You’re Going To Die / Impending Sense of Doom S – Skin Mottled or Discoloured

This year, I'm walking to save lives with the American Heart Association. This Saturday, 2 Nov 2024 on the Mall in DC, I will take steps to bring us closer to ending heart disease and stroke. Will you support with a donation, or join me on the Mall? Heart disease is still the #1 killer and stroke ranks # 5 in the USA. Even today, survival rates can still be grim. 9 out of 10 people who suffer cardiac arrest outside of the hospital die. Military veterans are at a higher risk of heart disease than non-veterans, and may need more rigorous cardiovascular prevention programs: Hypertension: 43.1% of veterans reported hypertension, compared to 32.9% of non-veterans Coronary heart disease: 9.2% of veterans reported coronary heart disease, compared to 4.7% of non-veterans Other heart conditions: 11.3% of veterans reported other heart conditions, compared to 7.9% of non-veterans Stroke: 4.9% of veterans reported stroke, compared to 3.1% of non-veterans Heart attacks: 7.1% of veterans reported heart attacks, compared to 3.3% of non-veterans Chronic heart failure (CHF): 5% of veterans in the VA health care system have CHF, and the annual mortality rate is 15% A study found that veterans may be at a higher risk of heart disease over time, even when controlling for other factors like socio-economic characteristics, health behaviors, and depressive symptoms. A Tale of Hope and Healing On January 8, a heartfelt message reached us, a plea for help for little Iwana, a 3-year-old girl battling severe combined immunodeficiency. Post her bone marrow transplant in January 2022, complications arose - graft versus host disease, CMV colitis, and viremia resistant to common anti-virals. Her journey took a turn when we received a single message that changed everything. Iwana’s family was desperately seeking medication, specifically Letermovir, crucial for treating her resistant CMV viremia and colitis. The situation was dire, with financial constraints adding to the family’s anguish. Miraculously, during one of our medical drives, fate intervened. From Belgium, a single box of Letermovir made its way into our hands end of last year (Nov 2023). A chance occurrence that proved to be nothing short of a miracle. This one box, often overlooked as a mere statistic in medical drives, became the beacon of hope for Iwana. 4 lessons to learn from this story?: ?? The Power of One Box; This medication, valued at thousands of dollars, became Iwana’s lifeline. It addressed the complexities of her condition, offering a chance for a renewed life. ?? Gratitude Beyond Words; Today, we share this success story with immense gratitude. Pulmonary Fibrosis request. Yesterday we said goodbye to my Dad. He was a kind well loved man who was given a send off he would have been proud of. Those close to us will know he was diagnosed with interstitial lung disease likely advanced by a severe case of Covid in 2020. The life expectancy is 3-5 years and as the scarring of the lungs progresses oxygen is needed around the clock. For Dad it was particularly painful to watch as he had a chronic cough and was unable to take more than a few steps (if at all) and found speaking very tough. All this with a perfectly healthy mind. There is still so little known about ILD and in Dads case, it advanced to be described as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). As a family this disease was unknown to us, and as with most things when you live them, you start to learn more and more. Firstly, that it is a particularly nasty disease and that the strength of mind needed to keep going day after day is second to none. Secondly, that the disease cannot be stopped and for the patient this makes mental health a top priority. Finally, that it is a relatively underfunded area and that the specific pulmonary fibrosis support for carers isn’t as good as it could be. With this in mind, if able, we are asking for donations to please be made to Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis. They were initially quite small but are growing in size and services. Did you know:? *1 in every 3 deaths in the United States is related to cardiovascular disease.? *As many as 11.6 million Americans are estimated to have heart valve disease, and each year around 25,000 people die from the disease.? *Thoracic aortic aneurysms affect 10 of every 100,000 people. *Aortic dissection is a relatively rare but highly lethal disease. The estimated incidence is 5–30 cases per million people per year. For untreated acute dissection of the ascending aorta, the mortality rate is 1–2% per hour early after symptom onset. *Fortunately, aortic disease can usually be successfully treated in patients of all ages when diagnosed in time.
