This one broke my heart. ?? I love what I do at work, and I love what I do outside of work. I coach my daughter's youth basketball team, and it's honestly the highlight of my week. We're a diverse team; we celebrate one another, and we build from the strength that diversity brings... and the team is stronger and our players are better people as a result. Youth sport is wonderful. It reinforces so many positive skills. It should be a place of joy and excitement and encouragement. Get active! Coach, or volunteer as an umpire, or speak with your kids about how to be a good teammate and a good sport. (And importantly, parents, be a good specatator.) Great kids become great adults by learning from other great adults, and we need more of them. Be a part of the solution. #EndRacism I agree with Jarmiles: "I'm sick of it. It needs to be over." Stand tall, my man, and stand proud.
A video of an Indigenous boy distressed after experiencing racist abuse at training has sparked widespread expressions of support for the young footballer. His mother, Tamika Matthews, told National Indigenous Times her children have also faced racism at school.

Sports provide another great opportunity for self reflection and education. Yesterday Bronny James was drafted into the NBA by the Lakers to play alongside his father, LaBron James. Some of us have an issue with this and roll our eyes in disgust. Some of us are angered by the special treatment, the unfair advantage. Well, can you rationalize or make sense of the wealth, opportunities, property, influence and positions that have been passed down in this nation by whites to their children? Isn’t that how American wealth was built? Land and slave owners, companies that used free labor or made supplies for the industry of slavery? It was all passed down, right? How are you processing this? How are responding when it’s talked about in your circles? #DEI #inclusion #equity #decolonizeyourmind

A little bit of interesting history for you today June 19th, 1865, when Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas, confirming the war's end and ensuring the freedom of all enslaved individuals. Though the Emancipation Proclamation was a beacon of hope in 1863, it took over two years for its promises to be realised in Texas, the last state of the Confederacy with institutional slavery. As we commemorate this pivotal moment in history, let's reflect on the journey towards equality and justice. The resilience and courage of those freed on Juneteenth continue to inspire. Let's honour their legacy by fostering inclusivity and championing diversity in our workplaces and communities. Yet, as we celebrate progress, let us also acknowledge the road ahead. The pursuit of justice is ongoing, and we must commit ourselves to creating a future where opportunity and freedom are not just ideals but realities for all. This Juneteenth, take time to educate, to celebrate, and to act. Whether through community service, participating in events, or simply broadening our collective understanding—every effort counts in honouring this significant day in history. #Juneteenth #FreedomDay #Equality

Higher Education Consultant, Doctoral Candidate, UCL-IOE, Former Interim Executive Director, Fulbright Colombia (February 20-August 19, 2024)
For those of us who are interested in research on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, this is is a very interesting analysis by Richard Reeves (author "Of Boys and Men") about the gender gap in higher education and other sectors in the US, now favoring girls and women. This means that in the US there are more women than men who obtain bachelor′s degrees. This gender gap favoring women holds true in other sectors as well such as health, education, administration and literacy (HEAL). Gender inequalities can run both ways and can have important implications. Worth watching to have insights on these topics. https://lnkd.in/eS-nyrCg

Malcom X: and Me We may be more alike than not. https://lnkd.in/gqddQBtG I myself would go for nonviolence if it was consistent, if everybody was going to be nonviolent all the time. I'd say, okay, let's get with it, we'll all be nonviolent. But I don't go along with any kind of nonviolence unless everybody's going to be nonviolent. If they make the Ku Klux Klan nonviolent, I'll be nonviolent. If they make the White Citizens Council nonviolent, I'll be nonviolent. But as long as you've got somebody else not being nonviolent, I don't want anybody coming to me talking any nonviolent talk. I don't think it is fair to tell our people to be nonviolent unless someone is out there making the Klan and the Citizens Council and these other groups also be nonviolent... If the leaders of the nonviolent movement can go into the white community and teach nonviolence, good. I'd go along with that. But as long as I see them teaching nonviolence only in the black community, we can't go along with that. We believe in equality, and equality means that you have to put the same thing over here that you put over there. And if black people alone are going to be the ones who are nonviolent, then it's not fair. We throw ourselves off guard. In fact, we disarm ourselves and make ourselves defenseless. . . . [W]e of the Organization of Afro-American Unity realized the only time the black man in this country is given any kind of recognition, or even listened to, is when America is afraid of outside pressure, or when she's afraid of her image abroad. So we saw that it was necessary to expand the problem and the struggle of the black man in this country until it went above and beyond the jurisdiction of the United States. . . . What African Americans failed to do. Hamas has achieved.

To me Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is more than just a buzzword – it's a game-changer that defines our purpose. In our communities, there are countless bright and talented children who, given the right opportunity, could change the world. Life's inherent unfairness denies them this chance. The lack of hope and imagination is robbing us of our greatest minds and stifling innovation. I aspire to work with partners and help businesses build their social capital around children. Showing future the possibilities, ignite hope, and inspire them by providing a glimpse into the inner workings of businesses and professions that seem out of reach. At Carbonado we go beyond standard programs, we design immersive work experiences that allow students to run a business or step into your profession. Our commitment is to make it seamless for you. Through our School Work Experience Programmes (SWEP), we craft tailor-made experiences for any profession or industry. By extending hands-on opportunities to local schools, you not only contribute to the community but also position your business as a socially responsible leader. Join us in making a difference – not just in the business world but in the lives of aspiring young minds. Let's create a legacy of empowerment together. #CSR #SocialImpact #EducationForAll #TransformingLives #CommunityEngagement #InnovationInEducation #EmpowerTheFuture

Barnardo's SEEN team hosted a conference at Leeds Beckett University, raising awareness learning and working on Anti-racism in school. Ghino Parker and her amazing team led by Delano Gournet-Moore delivered a though provoking event. Prof Vini Lander gave a compelling overview of the work the Centre for Race, Education and Decoloniality is doing to tackle racism in children’s education. The Children's Society’s Society gave a powerful presentation about the impact of arbitrary school rules and the impact of disproportionate enforcement against children of colour. Dr Marie-Annick Gournet (PhD), FRSA led on enlightening discussion on ‘Transformative inclusive pedagogy’. The Race Equality Foundation and their child representatives gave a powerful presentation on ‘Experiences of racism and trauma within British Schools’. Christine Kinnear ran an interesting workshop on ‘mentoring with purpose’ that inspired and advised delegates to run mentoring programmes. We were also treated to a gripping short film and workshop by AMANI SIMPSON called ‘Save Me’ about the presumptions, stereotyping and biased judgements people make around the sexual and criminal exploitation of children. All our Children are the future. Yes, it takes a village to raise a child, but it takes a community to raise a generation. This said, it was inspiring to meet so many speakers and delegates committed to ensuring our children are protected, inspired and fulfilled. #weareseen #protectwhatmatters #racialjustice #Barnardos

The United States' history of enslavement, segregation, economic injustice, and institutional racism contributes to an overrepresentation of African Americans in the #childwelfare system, and it likely also contributes to the larger percentage of Black children in informal grandfamilies. Use this tip sheet and #toolkit from Generations United as reference tools to improve culturally responsive services for Black #kinship families and #grandfamilies. https://buff.ly/42cwA6H

These are excellent words from a young person....
Passionate Learning & Development Expert | Driving Inclusive Workplaces & High-Performing Teams | Keynote Speaker | Transforming Cultures & Unlocking Leadership Potential | DEI Trailblazer
Listen closely to the words from this young person. I 100% agree. A politician's job is to serve and represent their #community, focusing on the collective #needs and #welfare. This includes creating and supporting #policies that enhance the community's quality of life, such as improving #public services, ensuring economic stability, and fostering a safe and #inclusive environment for all citizens. Their mandate is to work towards the betterment of the community as a whole, addressing issues like #healthcare, #education, #infrastructure, and public #safety. Policing personal lives, on the other hand, does NOT fall within the scope of a politician's #duties. The intrusion into individual choices and lifestyles not only detracts from their primary responsibilities but also poses a threat to personal #freedoms and liberties, which are fundamental in a #democratic society. When #politicians start policing personal lives, they impose their personal #biases and #beliefs onto others, infringing on individual #rights and #freedoms. This is contrary to the principles of #equality and non-discrimination, which are core tenets of a #progressive and inclusive society. Politicians should focus on fostering a culture of respect and understanding, where #diversity in personal choices and lifestyles is acknowledged and valued. Their job is to create a framework that allows all human beings to thrive without fear of #judgment or interference, ensuring that the rights of every person are protected and upheld. This approach not only aligns with democratic values but also strengthens communities by promoting #unity in diversity.

SPORTS: THE “GLUE” THAT “FUELS” COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS AMONGST CHILDREN AND YOUTH ? Local sports events bring the community together, which can increase social bonds and meaningful connections. Offenses often committed by children shouldn’t result in prison time. Sadly various laws disproportionately affect children who are poor, homeless or mentally ill. Adults too exploit marginalized children to commit crimes, while migrant children are excessively detained. Further, children belonging to minority religious or ethnic groups are more likely to be incarcerated. ? Sports remains apolitical and universal language that is globally used to address the aforementioned inequalities. FARIJI programs includes organizing sporting events between the community teams and sports teams inside correctional facilities. Offering a platform for youth mentorship, mindset and Lifeskills conversations from incarcerated persons. On the other hand using sports as a tool for offender rehabilitation and rehabilitation within the correctional facilities. ? Different stakeholders in the community needs to come together – after all the old adage “your car alone cannot form a convoy” never truer! ? How can you be “part of the convoy”? ?
