Finishing up our series on the wellbeing benefits of positive relationships, Dr Mahrukh Khwaja (MAPP) shines a light on the positive impact of kindness at work. “Continuing with our theme of positive relationships, another way we can do this in a dental context is to intentionally create kinder work environments through acts of kindness. Positive psychology research shows that doing small acts of kindness from paying someone a compliment at work, to allowing someone to go ahead of you in a queue outside of work, is good for us as well as for the recipients (Hui et al, 2020; Kotter 2008). Random acts of kindness can also promote a phenomenon known as the ‘happiness contagion’, where one good deed causes others to continue the chain of good deeds! It doesn’t take much, but it does make a difference.” Swipe or download to learn more about the benefits of acts of kindness, and ways you can infuse these activities more in the workplace. #actsofkindness #wellbeingindentistry #wellbeingatwork #culture #permah #teamwellbeing

I know, I can hear you now saying “okay, but what does that have to do with therapy?” Especially considering that stereotypical visions of therapy may have you thinking about an individual laying on a sofa with a single therapist (possibly old, possibly male, possibly bearded) sitting just out of the client’s vision holding a clipboard offering limited “mhmm”s and “ah, I see”s. That is not systems work. Working with a therapist who comes from a systemic framework will not look like this. Therapists who believe in systems theory (and there are many of us!), believe that every relationship (familial, romantic, friendship, professional) creates its own system with its own rules. Everyone in the system has a role and plays by the rules developed out of the system. This allows members to behave in predictable ways that are then met by predictable responses. The interplay leads to both balance and dysfunction in a system depending upon the system. . . . #therapy #mentalhealth #wellness #connecticut #newyork #newjersey #systemicthinking

My manager yelled at me… For cancelling our recurring 1-to-1s which they had failed to attend 5 weeks in a row. It was 3 weeks before the end of my 3 months notice period, after 2 years on the job. I’m sure no one likes being yelled at and as someone living with BPD and ADHD, this was extremely triggering ?? Yes, they knew about my neurodivergence (and had never offered any workplace adjustments or support, but that’s a story for another time). I was incredibly distraught and ended up having to be signed off for 2 weeks by my GP for acute stress and anxiety. There were no goodbyes with them or the team. Just a quick apology over email: “sorry for losing my rag on you” and… silence. I didn’t share this at the time because I was scared. But I’m doing it now because this type of behaviour must stop. No matter what… ? It’s never ok to yell at a team member. ? It’s never ok to yell at a colleague. ? It’s never ok to yell at a manager. Just take a break, a breather. Do what you need to do to regulate and later re-engage constructively and effectively. And, if you do loose your composure, because we’re all humans with emotions (I have BIG ones myself, hello BPD), at the very least offer a genuine apology. #BeYouBelong #MentalHealth #Neurodiversity #Freelancing #Multipotentialite #Storyteller #Authenticity #HumanInProgress [Image Description: Eye-rolling Solène, à White woman in her mid-thirties with mid-length wavy light brown hair and wearing a black and white dotted dress]
