Indigenous peoples are the original inhabitants of a particular region or country, having distinct cultural, social, and historical ties to the land. They typically maintain traditions, languages, and beliefs that predate colonization or the arrival of more dominant groups. Indigenous peoples often have unique relationships with their environment, deep spiritual practices, and communal ways of life. These groups have historically faced marginalization, displacement, and attempts to assimilate them into broader society. They are recognized for their significant contributions to biodiversity conservation, cultural diversity, and traditional knowledge systems. Other examples(besides Jews)of indigenous groups include Native Americans, the Inuit, the Māori, and the Aboriginal peoples of Australia. #timetostandupforIsrael

Can We Learn to Be in Kinship with the Ocean? ???????????????? How would our actions shift if we saw the ocean not as a resource but as a living being—our ancestor, our kin? In her recent article published by The Oceanography Society, Judy Benson explores this profound question, weaving together modern science, ancient wisdom, and the Rights of Nature movement. Indigenous traditions, such as those of the Mohegan Tribe, teach reverence for the ocean and the interconnectedness of all life. Could adopting this view of the ocean as a sentient force rather than an inanimate expanse help us build a deeper relationship with the sea—and, by extension, protect it? The ocean, the cradle of life on Earth, demands a philosophical shift in how we perceive its agency and power. As discussions on ocean literacy and legal Rights for Nature gain momentum, let’s reflect on how seeing the sea as alive could inspire more meaningful conservation efforts. And ultimately how these efforts could weave across terra firma, too. Read more about this perspective and the movement ?? #RightsOfNature #OceanConservation #IndigenousWisdom #OceanLiteracy #WildLaw

As we celebrate the #EuropeanDay of Conservation/Restoration it is important to consider that Cultural Heritage conservation goes beyond the conservation of physical structures—it’s about documenting and honoring the #IntangibleHeritage of local communities. By: ?? documenting and safeguarding living heritage ?? reprocessing traditional contexts ?? rehabilitating heritage sites ?? reviving community practices, we preserve the sense of ownership and cultural identity that local communities need. By empowering local communities as active #custodians of their #heritage, we not only preserve the tangible but also nurture the spiritual, economic, and social values embedded in traditions like food, local customs, crafts and clothing. Heritage is living—vibrant and meaningful for all. #Ευρωπα?κ?Ημ?ραΣυντ?ρηση?τη?Πολιτιστικ??Κληρονομι?? #IntangibleHeritage #LivingHeritage #UNESCO #HeritagePreservation

?? A Pivotal Moment for River Restoration! ?? The Klamath River, once one of the most heavily dammed rivers on the West Coast, is undergoing a transformative change with the removal of four major dams—the largest project of its kind in U.S. history. ??? This monumental effort will open up over 400 miles of essential habitat, helping to restore endangered species like coho and Chinook salmon, as well as steelhead trout. By dismantling these barriers, the river’s water quality will improve, and ecosystems that are vital to Indigenous communities and a host of wildlife will be rejuvenated. This project aims to reconnect the river’s natural flow, boost fish populations, and undo decades of environmental harm caused by the dams. ???? Research shows that dam removal can lead to rapid recovery, allowing rivers to heal and enabling the return of wildlife, such as river otters, great blue herons, and Pacific lamprey, that have been cut off from their habitats for over a century. This initiative not only signifies a major victory for environmental restoration but also serves as a model for river conservation efforts worldwide. ??? As we celebrate #CABiodiversityWeek, it’s a perfect time to recognize the rich plant and animal life of the Klamath River. This vibrant ecosystem supports a variety of species, from the willows and rushes that stabilize riverbanks, to osprey and river otters that depend on its waters. With the dams coming down, the river is on its way to becoming a thriving habitat once again. We’re excited to celebrate this historic achievement and look forward to a revitalized Klamath River full of life and resilience!
