It’s my job to raise awareness about gender-based violence. It’s actually yours, too. #16Days of Activism Against GBV ?? 1 in 3 women experience violence in their lifetime. Either you know someone or you are someone who has experienced violence because of your gender. Canada and the world must continue to improve prevention, response and accountability measures for crimes of gender-based violence. Both the problem and the solution start in our homes with how we treat each other, and spill out into our communities and the systems that govern our ways of life. What can we do to make sure that no more lives are lost due to gender-based violence? How can we take steps over the next #16Days to continue becoming “a community that cares”?

On Day 15 of the #16Days of Activism, we confront a devastating reality: more than 370 million girls and women — or 1 in 8 — have experienced rape or sexual assault before the age of 18. This is a global crisis that impacts millions of lives, leaving deep emotional, physical, and psychological scars. As highlighted in a recent UNICEF report, these crimes against children must be stopped. We cannot remain silent in the face of such widespread violence. It's time to demand stronger protections, better justice, and more support for survivors. We stand together to end this violence, raise awareness, and ensure a safer, more just future for every girl and woman. The 16 days of activism against gender-based violence began on 25 November and will end on 10 December. This year, the focus is on ‘Responding and rebuilding after violence’. Nearly one in three women suffers violence in her lifetime. Girls in particular are exposed to violence, according to UN Women. Violence, which mainly affects girls and women, requires an urgent and collective response. Raising awareness, protecting victims and denouncing acts of violence is a key step in building a violence-free society for our populations. ?? Each experience and each path of reconstruction is unique and individual. Available resources, disability, racialisation, age and identity are all factors that make people more vulnerable to violence. And yet, our collective response is essential to prevent violence and facilitate the reconstruction of its victims and surviv?es. Breaking free from violence is our collective responsibility! Today, we join the global movement for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the start of the 16 Days of Activism. An estimated 736 million women, nearly one in three, have faced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. In crisis zones like Tigray, the risks are even greater. Women face sexual violence, trafficking, forced labour, and exploitation. We’re working with CAFOD, SCIAF, Trócaire, and others in Tigray to protect vulnerable women and provide both immediate and long-term support to survivors. To end this, we all need to act. We must challenge harmful behaviour, support community driven solutions, and educate men and boys. ??? October 11 is the #InternationalDayoftheGirlChild, a day dedicated to celebrating girls worldwide, to amplify their voices and advocate for the rights of the girl child. ????♀? The theme for this year focuses on the Girls’ vision for the future. The future we envision for girls worldwide is one free from #sexualviolence. ?? Research has consistently shown that girls are disproportionately affected by sexual violence. According to UNICEF, 1 in 10 girls under the age of 20 had been forced to perform sexual acts in 2022. In Protect Children’s Project 2KNOW, survey results demonstrate that 78% of respondents seeking #CSAM search for material depicting girls. ? Acknowledging the reality of sexual violence that girls face should not be the endpoint. Active steps must be taken to work towards a future where the rights of the girl child are protected and upheld. I have been researching and writing an article for Groundviews about a case of sexual #assault against a young girl, 16 years of age. The facts, as they have come to light as reported by the media over the past week, have been disturbing to read. The whole country is shocked by it. This case must prompt re-evaluation and #change, on many levels. Four years ago, I co-founded a group called End Sexual Violence Now (ESVN). Our members discuss any item of news or social issue which comes to our attention, and seek effective ways of raising #awareness in the community about the incidents of #abuse and degradation endured by the citizenry, particularly women, girls and children. We also collaborate with and share resources with groups such as Women In Need (WIN), Emerge, Sisters At Law, Bakamoono, Shhh! Talk About Taboos, Sambol Foundation, and others. The #violence against women is a global phenomenon: and it is escalating, fuelled by the recent disruptions caused by the #pandemic and the #economic downturns that have resulted. The sort of cruelty and disrespect we are seeing reported cannot happen when women have truly equal status. Every 10 minutes, a woman is killed by someone she knows. Femicide—the intentional killing of women because of their gender—is a global crisis. In 2023, 51,100 women and girls were killed by intimate partners or family members, accounting for 60% of all intimate partner and family-related killings. At the Centre for Social Research, we believe these deaths are preventable. The world must act to: ?? Strengthen gender-responsive policing and justice systems. ??
