Climate change has intensified the severity of natural disasters, displacing millions worldwide and exacerbating existing social and economic inequalities. As we observe World Refugee Day (20th June) and the UK’s Refugee Week (17th to 23rd June), a time dedicated to celebrating the strength and resilience of refugees, it is crucial to reflect on the profound implications of climate change in displacing communities. People living in marginalised communities are often the most affected by climate-related disasters, facing limited access to resources, inadequate infrastructure, and social exclusion, which makes them more susceptible to the impacts of the climate crisis. The repercussions of our actions, or lack thereof, reverberate across continents, affecting the lives of countless individuals and communities. The need for concerted global action on climate change mitigation, adaptation, and humanitarian responses has never been more pressing. This article is an example of why we need to center communities in our health communication efforts. There is still a significant population who discount the effects of climate change happening now. But we see those effects after every natural disaster - in Hawaii after the recent wildfires, in many states across the South after major hurricanes, not to mention droughts, floods, earthquakes, etc. happening around the world. And we see the effects in communities where rising temperatures lead to the an increase in heat-related illnesses due to lack of ample trees for shade and other cooling mechanisms as well as workplace heat protections. Every one of these events impacts the life of a community.
According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, an annual average of?21.5 million?people have been forcibly displaced, on average, each year since 2008 by weather-related events such as floods, storms, wildfires, and extreme temperatures. “Each of these statistics is a man, woman, or child whose life has been destroyed, who has lost home, family, and friends. Said goodbye — perhaps forever — to relatives who are too old or sick to make an arduous journey to safer locations,”?said UN commissioner Filippo Grandi. #ClimateChange #Displacement #PublicHealth #HealthEquity #ClimateChangesHealth

Have you ever heard about climate change refugees ? This was a question I asked during a climate change workshop I facilitated last year. The students in front of me were shocked and in the same time, surprised as they have never heard about this issue before. We usually heard about humanitarian refugees due to political conflicts, wars, instable situations. However,?recently, a new term has emerged : #climate #change refugees. For those who are not familiar with this expression : climate change refugees are people who are forced to displacement due to #climate #change related events such as natural disasters, floods, droughts, etc. According to a recent report of the UN Refugee Agency, over the past decade, weather-related disasters have caused 220 million internal displacements which is equivalent to approximately 60 000 displacements per day.?It means 60 000 lives affected, 60 000 dreams broken, 60 000 people facing precarious life conditions. A number that sounds?scary and alarming, and is expected to rise as the climate change related events are projected to increase in the next years. These displacements would have major impacts on the host countries and communities including political instability, increased violence, lack of access to basic?needs?such as (water, electricity, etc), etc. According to the same report, only 24 of 60 national adaptation plans (NAPs) and 25 of 166 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) have considered concrete provisions on displacement related to climate change and natural disasters. Which highlights the urgent need to include climate change displacement in the national politics and strategies related to climate change and sustainability. The #climate crisis isn't a story to talk about, it's an emergency for the whole humanity, we need to act urgently through investing in #green technologies, and implementing effective strategies to ensure an equitable, safe and prosperous future for all. Afghanistan has faced the dual challenges of armed conflict and climate-induced natural disasters for several decades – with many people displaced within the country as a result. In the face of these difficult circumstances, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities are addressing the intricate challenges head on, with adaptations relating to water scarcity, energy sources, climate-driven cooling solutions, food preservation solutions and livelihood diversification. Zaki Ullah and Aaftab Ullah of GLOW Consultants (Private) Limited explore these climate change adaptations, with their detailed case study from Herat, Afghanistan – read on in our latest edition of the Humanitarian Exchange magazine ? https://lnkd.in/eqRDRnHg #Afghanistan #Conflict #Displacement #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAdaptation

Climate refugees are impacted first and worst by the #ClimateCrisis, yet they have done the least to cause it. This deep injustice is worsened by the fact they lack international legal protections, which has severely harmed their human rights. In 2023, 46.9 million people were displaced internally, with 56% of displacements being a result of extreme weather disasters. Since then, the situation has not improved, as fossil fuel companies expanded their oil and gas development and millions more people are expected to have been displaced by ongoing climate disasters. 2024 saw disasters such as massive fires in Brazil, record-breaking hurricanes in the southern United States and Caribbean, and deadly flooding in Spain, to name a few. These events have uprooted lives and homes, leaving deep scars on communities and the natural world. In recent years, people in the Horn of Africa have experienced devastating drought and flooding, which has killed and displaced many. Dadaab refugee camp houses many of these refugees from Somalia, and their resources become more stretched as the climate crisis worsens. In 2024, heavy rains displaced tens of thousands of residents there – many of whom had fled drought in Somalia now losing their shelter to flooding in Dadaab. Climate refugees have a right to a safe home, food and water, education, healthcare, and much more, yet these rights are being trampled on by our addiction to carbon and failure to support them. A new legal framework for the protection of climate refugees must be developed, and countries must scale up and meet both their emissions reduction and climate finance targets. Climate Refugees Nobody chooses to be one. As many discussions surround climate change, People are left out, and the focus is on the environment. What should be done, and what should not be done. And I am for it. But how about these people who are forced to leave places they have called home all their lives? →?They are not migrants or immigrants. →?They are not economic refugees. →?They are not the polar bears. →?They are not the coral reefs. →?These are not the ice caps. They are people who have lost their homes. They are people who have lost their livelihoods. They are people who have lost their sense of identity. They are the people forced to come to terms with a new reality, Which comes with little or no support. As we focus on measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change, We also need strategies to strengthen disaster risk reduction. Legal protection should also be enhanced to protect their rights. They should have access to durable solutions, resettlement, and humanitarian assistance. Education and awareness should also be offered to support collective climate action and help climate refugees. #sustainability #climatechange

The horrible situation in my home state in Southern Brazil is ongoing, authorities do not have a clear idea of the real numbers, international news is underplaying the severity of the situation, as these are based on official numbers and not many can be in on the action to see what is actually going on. More importantly, however, is that as a result of that, we will have hundreds of thousands of climate refugees in Rio Grande do Sul. When the water comes down, whenever that may be, we will have a dire portrait of the real casualty count. Climate refugees are likely to be an ever increasingly common reality, so we all need to make a change, and think of long-term solutions for this.

The Climate Refugee Crisis is Here. And It's Escalating. Every year, the devastating impacts of climate change become more challenging to ignore. Millions are losing their homes, their livelihoods, and their futures. These aren’t just statistics—they are real people forced to flee due to climate-induced disasters. Imagine waking up one day and realizing that your home, community, culture, history, and way of life are being destroyed. In 2022, 32.6 million people were forcibly displaced due to climate disasters, with 98% of these displacements caused by weather-related hazards—floods, storms, wildfires, and droughts. According to the International Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), this figure was the highest ever recorded. Between 2008 and 2016, 21.5 million people were displaced annually by climate-related events—and the numbers are only rising. The Institute for Economics and Peace predicts that by 2050, as many as 1.2 billion people could be displaced globally due to climate change and natural disasters. These aren’t just figures; they represent families, communities, and regions. The impacts of climate change are felt hardest in regions that are already struggling. Farmers are losing their crops to increasingly severe droughts, and coastal communities are being submerged by rising sea levels. This is no longer a future threat; it is happening today. We are witnessing the rise of climate refugees, and the need for action has never been more urgent. We must demand that our governments act—not just on reducing emissions but on building a just, equitable, and resilient future. We need policies that protect climate refugees and ensure that they have the resources to rebuild their lives. This is about climate justice. Will our governments act urgently to prevent the worst impacts of climate displacement? #ClimateCrisis #ClimateRefugees

The climate crisis is a human crisis. The convergence of both is driving displacement and increasing the vulnerability of those already forced to flee. As a response UNHCR has launched the Climate Resilience Fund which aims to ensure that forcibly displaced people fleeing from or living in climate-vulnerable countries are #protected from and #resilient to the impact of #climatechange. Working on the launch of the Fund has been an enriching experience and once again proved the importance of climate finance and financing mechanisms that prioritize sustainability and the building of a climate-resilient world. #withrefugees #climateresiliencefund

4 周Thanks for sharing this. Lot's of insight. Perhaps, it would be better to focus on one story, with some personal touch, and make it impossible to ignore. Now, there are lot's.of concepts and cases from around the world, and the message is lost.
