?? While tuning into a podcast with Ana Maria Palusci RN, PMP, MBA- Business Analytics, Applied AI/ML & Karim Keshavjee Kashjevee, an eye-opening fact was shared: Canada's healthcare expenditure hits a staggering $350 billion annually, equating to $8,740 per Canadian. To put this into perspective, this sum surpasses the combined GDPs of Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania, which total $309 billion. ????
But here's the catch: Despite this hefty investment, our healthcare system seems to be treading water. ???? We're pouring funds into the system, yet the value and efficiency we get in return are questionable. The real issue? Our healthcare infrastructure and policies aren't keeping pace with the evolving needs of population health.
A telling survey by Angus Reid Foundation in August 2022 revealed that 40% of Canadian adults faced hurdles in accessing critical health services within a six-month span. Whether it was emergency care, surgeries, diagnostic tests, or specialist appointments, the challenges were significant. ???
This is a clarion call for a shift - from a reactive stance to proactive innovation in our healthcare model. Embracing upstream policy interventions is crucial, as they target the root causes of health issues before they escalate, fostering a more sustainable and preventative approach to healthcare The need of the hour is system innovation, enhanced access, and incentives that foster risk-taking and innovation. ????
It's not just about how much we spend, but where and how effectively the resources are allocated. From clinics to hospitals and community health centers, the incentives need realignment. ????
Interestingly, in our healthcare system, it's not the price but the policy that dictates health information technology and services. This pivotal shift from price to policy underlines the unique dynamics of Canada's healthcare landscape. ??????
We stand at a crossroads where the call for a dynamic, evolving healthcare system, bolstered by policy innovation and infrastructural development, has never been louder. Let's advocate for a healthcare system that not only spends wisely but also innovates and evolves to meet the health needs of our population. ?????
