UNOSSC Senior Policy Development Advisor Samba Thiam introduced the 2024 Report of the United Nations Secretary-General on the State of #SouthSouthCooperation to the Economic and Financial Committee (2nd Committee) of the UN General Assembly. “Developing countries are assuming leadership roles in global economic governance,” said Mr. Thiam, noting that, “Key challenges faced by UN entities include a lack of institutional arrangements, necessary capacity, and funding for scaled-up South-South cooperation support.” The report of the SG analyses #SouthSouth and #TriangularCooperation trends and opportunities. It also highlights United Nations support provided to Member States through policies and programmes that mainstream South-South and triangular cooperation at all levels. UNDP led 612 #SouthSouth and #TriangularCooperation initiatives in over 121 countries, said Achim Steiner during the first regular session of the Executive Board of UNDP, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and UNOPS (#UNDPEB). It was highlighted that UNOSSC, in partnership with #Portugal, has established a dedicated Triangular Cooperation Window, and launched the South-South and Triangular Cooperation Solutions Lab. Yesterday, on the margins of the African Development Bank Group Annual Meetings, we joined the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) and International Development Research Centre (IDRC) for a high-level discussion on "Making the global financial architecture work for African countries". The event tackled critical issues facing African nations, including: ? Strengthening financial inclusion to promote inclusive growth ? Building resilience to global and local shocks, such as geopolitical conflicts, climate change, and pandemics, through robust financial systems ? Advocating for reforms to create a global financial architecture that is equitable and supports sustainable development in Africa. Insights from recent AERC research projects supported by IDRC were presented, highlighting the importance of evidence-based policymaking in addressing challenges. The event fostered valuable dialogue among key stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, and development practitioners.?This collaboration paves the way for new research initiatives, policy action, and innovative practices to enhance Africa's economic future. The Office of the United Nations Development Programme in Guinea-Bissau (UNDP), in partnership with the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Regional Integration, presented the Human Development Report 2023-2024, “Breaking the gridlock: Reimagining cooperation in a polarized world”. The Report calls for us to change course, otherwise the world may not recover from the trend. To do this we need to capitalize on our local and global connections, choosing cooperation over conflict.
