Dr. Natalie Holdren reminds us: "Having high-quality IEP goals that guide a student’s daily programming is really important. Are they measurable? Are they meaningful? Are they reflective of the family’s goals and values?" As professionals in the disability space, we have the opportunity to guide families in ensuring that IEP goals are not just checkboxes but truly support a child’s growth and success. ?? ?? Why It’s Crucial for Families to Attend Annual IEP Meetings As an advocate for children with disabilities, I can’t stress enough how important it is for families to actively participate in their child’s annual IEP meetings. These meetings are a powerful opportunity for parents to ensure that their child’s unique needs are understood and addressed. One of the most impactful ways families can prepare is by drafting a Parent Input and Concern Statement ahead of time. This simple yet essential step allows you to clearly communicate your priorities, observations, and hopes for your child’s education. Here’s an example of what this might look like: ?? Parent Input and Concern Statement: "Our primary concern is ensuring that our child receives the support necessary to succeed academically and socially. We’ve observed challenges in [specific area], and we’d like to discuss strategies that could address this while fostering their confidence and independence." ?? Parent Input and Concern Statement for Pre-Vocational and Postsecondary Goals: "As we prepare for [child’s name]’s future, we’d like to focus on pre-vocational skills that align with their strengths and interests, such as [specific skill or area]. We also want to explore postsecondary opportunities like [specific program or career path], ensuring they have the tools and guidance needed to thrive after high school." Parents can even email these statements to the IEP team in advance, giving everyone a chance to review and prepare for a productive discussion. This proactive step ensures that your voice is heard and the meeting stays focused on your child’s goals and success. Your involvement makes all the difference. Together, we can build a strong foundation for our children’s futures! ?? #IEPMeetings #SpecialEducation #ParentAdvocacy #InclusiveEducation #XandersPlace #advokids

Attending an IEP meeting? Make sure you ask these essential questions to ensure your child’s Individualized Education Program is comprehensive and effective: 1) Are all of my child's needs identified and listed, even if they are not directly addressed in the IEP? 2) Do the baselines reflect my child's true functional level without prompts? These steps are crucial for creating a plan that truly supports your child's educational journey. #SpecialEducation #IEP #ParentAdvocacy #ChildSuccess #BallouEducation
