Students in Prince George’s County, Maryland, wanted climate action. Parents, teachers, and school officials did, too. Together, they achieved a milestone that is having a ripple effect in their own school district and statewide. In 2022, Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) established the very first school district Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP) in Maryland. Since then, a workgroup implementing the plan has been taking concrete steps toward clean energy in school buildings, bus fleets, and landscapes. https://hubs.ly/Q02yR1ZL0

Extreme heat is life-threatening, and this summer is predicted to be the hottest on record. As a record-breaking heat wave scorches the Midwest and Northeast, our most under-served communities are at risk. Deadly heat waves remind us of the urgency of equitable climate justice. In light of this historic heat dome, Bullfrog Films presents COOKED: Survival by ZIP Code, the story of how, in 1995, 739 Chicago residents—mostly elderly and Black—died over the course of just one week in the worst heat disaster in U.S. history. Directed by Peabody Award-winner Judith Helfand, COOKED shines a powerful light on the issues of poverty, race, class, and education that underlie how natural disasters claim lives by linking the deadly 1995 Chicago heat wave's devastation to the man-made disaster of structural racism, and delving into one of our nation's biggest growth industries: Disaster Preparedness. Available now on DVD, DVD+DSL and streaming for educational use. #heatwave #heatdeath #climatejustice #structuralracism #urbanplanning #urbanstudies #disasterpreparedness #documentary #bullfrogfilms https://lnkd.in/e7QRKiit

Policy and for-profit solutions are powerful tools against climate change, but philanthropy has a special role in mitigating the human costs -- disruptions to education, damage to livelihoods, and toll of mental health. Prof. Jisung Park's book is a good read about the hidden costs of climate change.
R. Jisung Park, our colleague at the School of Social Policy & Practice at the University of Pennsylvania, writes in his book Slow Burn: The Hidden Costs of a Warming World about the human consequences of natural disasters -- for example, what happens to children when schooling is disrupted by repeated storms or floods. The COVID pandemic was a global example of how learning can be affected in a pandemic, but these kinds of disruptions also happen in localized disasters around the world, and some communities are disproportionately and repeatedly affected. As part of a Penn Environmental Innovations Initiative research community, our founding executive director, Katherina Rosqueta, is currently working with Jisung and nine other Penn colleagues to look at how donors can build societal resistance to environmental crises so that children and communities can thrive under pressure. ?????????????????????? ???????? ???????????????????? ?????? ???? ?????????????? ?? The Energy and Climate Change, has been working with Hampshire County Council (HCC) on the Overheating Risk Assessment for UK schools project. The work initially focused on understanding the overheating risk in HCC’s school building stock since 2021. It has now been extended to a national assessment, majority funded by the Department for Education (DfE). ???????? ???????? ?????? ???????????????? ??????????????? ? Develop a rapid technical assessment tool for overheating risk at the classroom level for schools. ? Analyse overheating risks across the national school building stock in both current and projected future climates. ? Explore ways to empower schoolchildren to adapt their behavior during heatwave events. ?????? ?????? ???? ???????????? ??????????????????????????? We created "?????? ?????????????? ?????? ???? ????????????" story with a series of engaging sticker activity tasks that help evaluate the approach. The story provides thermal comfort information to schoolchildren, enabling them to have the confidence to take personal actions in the classroom, such as removing a jumper, drinking more water or moving away from sunlight.
