UVA Health faculty demand removal of CEO, med school dean A Sept. 5 letter from 128 U.Va. Physicians Group-employed faculty, addressed to the university's board of visitors and published by the student-run daily news organization, calls for immediate removal of the leaders. The five-page letter accuses Drs. Kent and Kibbe of fostering a negative work environment that compromises patient safety and "is contributing to an ongoing exodus of experience and expertise." The University of Georgia retained Tripp Umbach to assess the feasibility and potential economic impact of establishing an independent medical school at UGA.?The findings presented within the report indicate that Georgia has a critical physician shortage in a large, underserved region.?This healthcare crisis must be addressed. The bill to ban DEI in medicine represents a critical crossroads for healthcare equity. As a health equity strategist, it's clear that DEI's core principles are not mere checkboxes but lifelines that ensure healthcare is accessible, fair, and inclusive for all, especially historically marginalized communities. Removing DEI initiatives risks widening the already significant healthcare disparities, impacting not just the quality but the very accessibility of healthcare for diverse populations. This move challenges us to find innovative, sustainable ways to embed equity deeply into our healthcare fabric, beyond legislative mandates, ensuring that every individual has the chance to achieve optimal health outcomes, backed by a system that values diversity and inclusivity at its core.

????Let's chat about why holistic nursing practice is so important. As healthcare professionals, it's our job to constantly educate ourselves so we can provide the best possible care to our patients. If you ban DEI in Medicine then you ban the over 55.6% of first-year medical students who identify as women. If you ban DEI in Medicine you stop the study of hereditary diseases like sickle cell anemia and Tay Sachs Disease which disproportionately impact minoritized communities. If you ban DEI in Medicine you remove all the language translation services that enable people to speak to their healthcare providers. If you ban DEI in Medicine you remove requirements that require clinical trials include a diversity of different body types, genders, ages, races etc. If you ban DEI in Medicine you get rid of specialties like pediatrics and geriatrics cause why should we treat people differently just because of their age. If we ban DEI in Medicine we no longer require accessible facilities so all the disabled people who need healthcare can just go away. Medicine is fundamentally an exercise in DEI. It is about seeing each patient as unique and requiring of customized treat to heal what ails them. If you ban DEI in Medicine, you ban medicine.

EVIDENCE-BASED MEDICINE..? An interesting question raised by Joel here. It's reasonably well-established that diversity and inclusivity in healthcare is associated with greater access and better outcomes for patients from underserved and marginalised communities. However, whether mainstream, contemporary #DEI roles and initiatives are actually effective in improving that diversity and inclusivity, and more to the point whether formalised #DEI activities in themselves lead to improved patient outcomes, is far from proven. The #DEI industry is worth some $10 billion a year and (still) rapidly growing. Yet the evidence base for its (safety or) effectiveness remains questionable. Against this backdrop, and given the growing pressures on universally strained healthcare budgets, one may not like, or agree with, the Congressman's approach, but one might at least understand it. So how do we do better..?
