?? Dr. Louis W. Sullivan: A Pioneer for Health Equity ?? As a physician, public health leader, and former Secretary of Health and Human Services, Dr. Louis W. Sullivan has dedicated his life to breaking down barriers in healthcare. More than ever, this is the time that we as a country must advocate to continue the challenge of access to health care, especially for people of color. I often quote that the political determinants of health always result in the social determinants of life. Dr. Sullivan’s unwavering stance on health equity reminds us that everyone deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of race, income, or zip code. Dr. Sullivan has championed efforts to diversify the medical field, address health disparities, and improve access to preventative care for underresourced communities. His legacy as a founder of the Morehouse School of Medicine and an advocate for inclusive healthcare shows us that real change requires bold vision and action. Change is inevitable as we enter a new era of unknown leadership. We must enter it boldly with hope and action – not fear. Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah recently convened a panel of experts to discuss health care #affordability challenges and some possible solutions. Experts include PBGH’s Bill Kramer, Katie Martin of Health Care Cost Institute; and Ginger Chinn of Salt Lake Chamber. According to Kramer, “We’re in a crisis that has been going on for years and is growing in intensity. As health care costs increase, employers have less money to invest in business development, innovation and wages. Given that life expectancy in this country is decreasing, we’re not getting value for the money we’re investing in health care.” Kramer, Martin and Chinn discussed the importance of #PublicPolicy, #innovation and #advocacy in addressing health care costs. These are common problems for employers on a global scale. One solution is establishing KPIs focused on clinical and patient reported outcomes. Doing so is leading to measurable change in health and in total costs of care. International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) is a resource and community of practice for such solutions.

?? Good News Alert!!! I am kvelling (overjoyed with emotion) reading the news about Advocate Health Care's $1B (that's a "B" y'all) commitment to Chicago's southside! ?? ? While this headline may be the last item on your morning newsletter (if it makes it at all) this is HUGE news! ? $1B over 10 years to Chicago's south side includes: ?? $300M to build a new replacement hospital and hire 1,000 new employees (and the south side's first brand new hospital in 100 years) ?? $500M to increase access to outpatient care in the community including setting up appointment locations in 10 new locations ?? $200M invested in expanding research into chronic diseases and addressing social determinants of health ?? And $25M to expand workforce development to upskill current and future employees! ? Kudos to the team at Advocate for not only making so much progress with this commitment but also for going about this process WITH the community - listening and utilizing their feedback to build this plan. ? Proud to work with Advocate Health Care at the Corporate Coalition of Chicago - thank you for your leadership! I can only hope work like this led by Advocate Health Care, Discover Financial Services, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, Northwestern Medicine, SDI Presence and Health Care Council of Chicago (HC3) (to name a few!) encourages more companies get onboard and bring jobs to Chicago's underinvested neighborhoods. ? Many BSc (Biological Sciences) graduates tend to think that if they can not get into the GEMP or into an honours programme, then that's it! However, if there is anything we should have learnt during the COVID pandemic, it's that Public Health is one of the areas that need professionals in our country (ZA ????). If we wake up, and another pandemic is happening, we need to be ready, and not repeat past mistakes. Also, we are one of the worst affected by the HIV epidemic; and have new health issues that will need solutions as we grow into the high-income countries category. All this, before speaking of the need for professionals in clinical health. What I like about this repost is that it shows a variety of options available, and showcases public health as a flexible career in health. Our health system is one of the most advanced in the continent and one of the most capable in the world, granted! However, we have a long way to go before we tackle HIV (by 2030, according to the WHO); or have enough capability for an equity-directed system (Universal Health Coverage through the NHI) or even a system strong enough to consistently provide research and surveillance services. Public Health is a very important field that is often overlooked.
