Commercial construction isn't just about offices, businesses, restaurants, or breweries. At Buchanan, we collaborate closely with developers and property owners to bring their visions for residential planned communities and multi-family projects to life. Our design+build process, combined with our exceptional team of professionals and years of experience, fosters extraordinary collaboration that maximizes resources and potential. One shining example of this synergy is the Village of Cheshire in Black Mountain, 15 minutes east of Asheville. This project exemplifies this kind of collaboration. The developer's vision was to incorporate classic design elements within a community where homes are just a short walk from a pedestrian-friendly Town Center and a Fitness Complex, creating a vibrant, health-oriented community. Together, we're not just building structures; we’re creating living spaces that promote wellness and connection. Let's continue to innovate and transform our communities! #CommercialConstruction #DesignBuild #ResidentialDevelopment #CommunityBuilding #BuchananTeam

#CivicArchitecture is an essential aspect of our social fabric. These buildings and spaces allow the public to feel welcomed, safe, and engaged. We approach Civic stewardship with a holistic design vision because our work can positively impact the communities served. MWA’s first civic revitalization project transformed the Greene Library in Oakland into the African American Museum & Library at Oakland. Our civic portfolio has evolved to include urban design - 9th Avenue Terminal at the Port of Oakland, California - and community wellness and empowerment - Youth Uprising in Oakland, California. We continue to pursue Civic projects with complex and diverse stakeholder needs because these opportunities inspire significant social change. Public policy spitball: Repurpose underutilized stadiums as public housing. They're monumentally sturdy, they've already got great water and power infrastructure and are usually tightly connected to the metropolitan fabric. Surely we can develop modular housing units that could fit into the former playing and seating areas. The concourse becomes "main street" for the community, with first responder substations, a grocery, etc. All kinds of cool things you could do. It worked, as a grassroots effort, in many Roman arenas following the dissolution of the empire. And all they had was each other. This photo shows the Piazza di Santa Croce in Florence, which is a famous place, next to the former arena of Florentia, which is not, because the amphitheater's bones were coopted for housing sometime during the 5th or 6th centuries. As you can see, streets have since cut through it and curved around it, but those houses contain original walls and structures from the time of "Gladiator." We can improve on this idea. I think it's way better than demolishing the stadium and taxing residents for a new one. The sports teams can buy their own stadia.

Greenwich Millenium Village Oval Square, densified! Along one side of the square runs a 4 lane roadway and central reservation. This represents vastly excessive road space provision, that severs the potential social fabric and mitigates against the square ever becoming an active focal point for the community. It is frustrating to see the urban form locking in retrograde social effects for the foreseeable future. A (wishful) solution: squeeze the road space and retrofit a pavilion block.

Looking promising! Housing Diversity is the key and communities should be at the heart of housing.
Exciting developments in the world of community-led housing this week! Had a productive meeting with Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook alongside Tom Chance, Blase Lambert, and Helen Williams. Optimistic about the movement's potential contributions to future housing strategy and potential to implement recommendations from the Radix report (https://lnkd.in/ead75Mv2) and the insights from the New Local report on the role of community in placemaking (https://lnkd.in/exGCBrAi). #CommunityLedHousing #HousingStrategy #Placemaking

"You are getting things done" - this is what we most often have heard with RaivioBumann and Parkly - Transforming Urban Spaces projects because we are working in the field of placemaking: light, quick and lower-cost, but visible and tangible improvements which are reflecting the bigger changes people wish to see in cities. There are several reasons "small projects" are slow and difficult in big organisations like bigger cities and municipalities: planning culture, budgets, roles and so on. These obstacles call for creative bureaucracy, forming a shared vision and systems thinking/design - and they can be resolved. More and more cities are adopting a more flexible and iterative approach to urban design and see the benefits tactical urbanism in setting the direction for future cities starting now - and that's good news for "getting things done".

‘Conscious and deliberate collaboration….’ An inspiring article!!! Downtown Jasper, Indiana creating spaces designed to attract people back into the centre of the city. A place which is being built by partnership and collaboration. Having ideas, moving forward and getting stuff done…. The best part about this is that the Mayor’s Youth Council are involved - yes I’ll say it again…. For places to succeed we need youth involved in decision making….it’s their future place so why not!! Personally I don’t think it’s difficult; - generate ideas in collaboration - consult in the right way - develop a plan - make it happen - be brave and do things differently Too many times great ideas get scrapped because they’re ‘too difficult’ or bureaucracy. #collaboration #partnership #change #youth #futureofplace #placemaking

Congrats to the Better Block Foundation for bringing this critical topic to our attention. ?? Loneliness is a persistent issue in modern society. ?? Water features hold a unique potential to soothe the soul and create serene spaces where individuals can find solace amidst the hustle and bustle of city life. ?? By integrating water features into our urban environments, we can transform public spaces into inviting sanctuaries that encourage interaction and foster a sense of belonging. ??? From tranquil fountains in bustling plazas to captivating water murals adorning city walls to interactive and visitable water features, these design elements possess a unique ability to uplift spirits and alleviate the pervasive feelings of isolation. ?? It is imperative that we RETHINK cities as vibrant, engaging, and interconnected communities where the mere presence of water features can act as a catalyst for meaningful connections, combating Loneliness. #Rethink #waterfeatures #urbanspaces #landscape
“A big part of our work is simply, how do you have these moments where people can go from being strangers to being neighbors?” says Better Block Executive Director, Krista Nightengale. We had the opportunity to talk with Bloomberg CityLab about the upcoming Creating Connections design competition at Thanks-Giving Square this summer. Read through the article to learn more about the top ten finalists, their design concepts, and guest judges for the June 13 event: https://bloom.bg/499nQQv #BetterBlock #BetterBlockCreatingConnections #DesignCompetition #Architecture #Design #Fabrication #UrbanDesign #Placemaking #TacticalUrbanism #Competition #ThirdPlace Eve Pearlman Mitchell Silver, FAICP, Hon. ? TRANSFORMATION TUESDAY: Can you share a home with 30 families? In an age of subscription and shared services, from Spotify, Netflix, UberX to commuter bikes, the idea of ownership is hard to define. In this recent co-housing project by Boston Architects French2D, the idea of sharing takes on a completely different meaning. Bay State Cohousing, mixes private living quarters and shared spaces - think university accommodation (ie. UNITE Student Accommodation) with social benefits: weekly group dinners, built-in babysitters and access to shared tools and facilities such as guest quarters and play rooms for children. It takes inspiration from a type of intentional community building pioneered in Europe in the 1960s. I love many aspects of this story including community building, multigenerational housing, alternative approach to ownership, innovative funding to challenging planning and traditional land use politics. A great case study for creative solutions to alleviate UK's chronic housing shortage. #community #housing #social #innovation #cohousing #shared #ownership https://lnkd.in/e-tJaBRd

Happy Wednesday!!?? WHATS UP WITH THE SANDRA MOON ??PROJECT? Author | C. Knighten Source | Bigpicturehuntsville.com Our community here in Huntsville, is growing by leaps and bounds....literally. As we grow it is important that we keep in mind how old or abandoned buildings and complexes effect both the spirit and appearance of each unique community. When Grissom High School relocated to their new campus off South Parkway in 2017, the left behind a huge campus that had a been a focal point of activity on Bailey Cove Road. Because it was such and integral part of that community, a plan was in place to repurpose that location into a 'town center'! The city decided to leverage the existing assets......location, land, theatre, recreation facilities....and to incorporate additional improvements to create an amazing complex that benefits the entire community. The new South Huntsville Public Library which serves as a multifunctional facility featuring its own coffee ?shop called the Hatch Cafe', a makerspace studio and teen gaming?? center are big hits in the community. Additional upgrades will include, more green space and a new playground, parking upgrades, and bike??♀? and ped connections to promote healthy lifestyles. The 2nd Phase has turned the community center into a thriving Performance Arts Center with Arts Huntsville at its head! Their plan is to pull together outstanding performance arts groups from across the city to make this new center their home! The 3rd Phase is just around the corner and includes a new playground and additional parking. This phase will go out for bid by the end of the year. Between ranking in the Top 10 as One of the Best Cities to live in and being home to the #1 Chocolate shop in the entire United States.....why would you want to live anywhere else?? THAT....is the question!?? #deancommercialrealestate #commercialrealestate #propertymanagement #investors #retail #medicaloffices #leases #propertyinvestors #warehouses #huntsville #madison #athens

Why Real Estate? Because it’s more than just bricks; it’s about creating homes where memories are made, dreams take flight, and families flourish. For me, real estate isn’t just a business – it’s a passion. Have you ever walked into a home and felt an instant connection, like it whispered stories of laughter, love, and life? That’s why I chose real estate – because it’s not just about constructing buildings; it’s about crafting spaces where moments become memories. Each project is an opportunity to ask: How can we design a place that nurtures relationships, sparks joy, and fosters community? Every project we undertake is infused with love and dedication, with the goal of shaping communities where people truly belong. Join us on this journey of building more than houses; let’s create lasting legacies together
